Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree with approved CBEST credentials (or obtained within 6 months of hire)

Responsibilities
  • Must conduct an educational assessment within 72 hours of a student's admission into the facility to determine the academic level of the resident and any particular needs they may have.
  • Must provide educational services based on the individual academic development, literacy level, and linguistic ability of each resident.
  • Each student must receive a minimum of six hours of structured education, Monday through Friday, throughout the entire year in basic academic areas (Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, Physical Education, and English as a Second Language (ESL), if applicable)
  • Supervises, protects, and always cares for youth both individually and in groups.
  • Assists each student in working with a group and in handling individual problems.
  • Observe and address challenging behaviors and redirect them to more positive behavior.
  • Maintain classroom management and discipline using developmentally appropriate techniques.
  • Documents the youth’s progress, identifying the possible need for professional services and communicating such findings to professional staff.
  • Responsible for the total operation of one classroom, with ratios of 1:6 students.
  • Supervises and trains two (2) Teacher Aids in all facets of classroom activities.
  • Works one-to-one with students on their assignments.
  • Establishes baseline in educational lesson plans for youth of mixed ages for the purpose of meeting individual learning style, and pace of learning.
  • Grades students’ assignments as they are completed, appropriate for their grade level.
  • Documents goals and objectives and lesson plans commensurate with all ORR requirements. Meets with other school personnel and clinical staff members to discuss students’ educational and behavioral progress.
  • Establish and follow policies and procedures for all classroom environments for students to follow.
  • Create, foster, and maintain a physical environment that is conducive to learning and optimal growth and development; promote social interaction with all residents.
  • Plan and implement classroom activities based on the student's needs and the goals set forth.
  • Familiar with the growth, development, and range of treatment needs of adolescents.
  • Demonstrates professional and effective communication abilities, including the completion of written reports, letters, and plans, initiating verbal communications with students, case managers, and inter agency personnel.
