Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required for the Certified Medical Assistant I path.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program is required for the Certified Medical Assistant path, with one year of patient care experience preferred.
  • Certification is required through an accepted certifying organization, including American Medical Technologist, American Association of Medical Assistants, National Healthcareer Association, National Association of Healthcare Professionals, Medical Career Assessments, National Center for Competency Testing, or National Association for Health Professionals.
  • A current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required for the Certified Medical Assistant path.
  • Graduation from an accredited Practical Nurse program is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse I path.
  • A current South Carolina Licensed Practical Nurse license or compact-state license is required.
  • A current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse path.
  • The employee must be able to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions, and meet the stated vision and respirator-use requirements.
  • The employee must be able to work indoors in a latex-safe environment and frequently lift, lower, push, pull, or carry approximately 50 pounds unassisted.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure accurate calibration, cleaning, scheduled maintenance, and documentation for clinical and laboratory equipment as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and UMA.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts, and other pertinent information; communicate appropriately; and document test and examination results.
  • Communicate the plan of care to patients and develop patient education materials as necessary.
  • Maintain exam-room supplies, instruments, and cleanliness of the patient-care environment.
  • Maintain timely patient flow, assist with appointment and referral scheduling, screen patients for appropriate information, and provide diagnosis- and treatment-related patient education.
  • Observe, record, and report patients' physical and psychosocial conditions and reactions to medications and treatments to the physician.
  • Respond to and triage phone calls, call in orders as directed by the physician, and instruct patients regarding treatment or medication.
  • Monitor and distribute medications, including samples and controlled substances.
  • Triage patients and prepare them for physician examinations and procedures.
  • Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments as necessary.
  • Instruct patients in the collection of samples and tests.
  • Administer prescribed treatments and tests as ordered by the physician.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of patient care experience is preferred for the Certified Medical Assistant path.
