- An associate degree from an accredited school of ultrasound/sonography, completion of an accredited sonography program, a certificate of completion from a hospital-based program, or an associate degree from an accredited school of radiologic technology is required.
- Six months to one year of on-the-job clinical experience and training is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required within 6–12 months after hire.
- General ultrasound technologists must be registry eligible or registered with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography in obstetrics/gynecology and abdomen, including the physics board examination.
- Registry-eligible general ultrasound technologists must attempt the physics, obstetrics/gynecology, and abdomen registries within nine months of hire and successfully complete all three within 12 months of hire.
- Dedicated breast center technologists must be registry eligible or registered with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography in breast sonography, including the physics board examination, or registry eligible or registered in breast sonography through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
- Registry-eligible breast technologists must attempt the breast registries within six months and successfully complete certification through either the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists within nine months of hire.
- Ability to operate basic computer programs used for departmental record keeping is required.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, solve problems, and interact assertively with patients and physicians in difficult or sensitive situations is required.
- Customer service orientation is required.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative within established procedures, and demonstrate organization is required.
- Ability to stand and walk considerably, lift light objects up to 20 pounds, assist with lifting and moving patients, and sustain alertness during repetitive or detailed work is required.
- Receive or escort patients into the examination area, review pertinent patient information, and instruct patients about the examination.
- Position patients to obtain the diagnostic results specified by physicians.
- In consultation with a radiologist, perform diagnostic ultrasound scans using high-frequency ultrasound machines to image organs, masses, and fluid accumulations for physician interpretation.
- Operate all equipment properly and carefully, perform regular maintenance and quality control, and report malfunctions, adjustments, or repairs.
- Perform first aid as required and assist with adverse reactions to contrast media or other emergencies.
- Observe and practice sterile technique to prevent cross-contamination of contagious diseases.
- Maintain cleanliness of procedure rooms and equipment.
- Maintain accurate patient and file documentation.
- Maintain appropriate supply levels in assigned areas.
- Demonstrate or oversee on-the-job training for student technologists and other nonprofessional assistants as assigned.
- Demonstrate or oversee on-the-job training for newly hired ultrasound technologists or technologists requiring training for new procedures.
- Provide customer service when answering the phone.
- Some positions may require additional certifications.
