Requirements
  • Enrollment as a Registered Nurse student in the second, third, or fourth year of an accredited baccalaureate nursing program.
  • Enrollment as a Registered Practical Nurse student in the final year of an accredited nursing program.
  • A current certificate in Basic Life Support.
  • Completion of orientation and mandatory training provided by St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
  • Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices.
  • Evidence of good academic standing in the enrolled program.
  • Evidence of successful learning experiences in recent clinical placements.
  • Ability to communicate confidentially and professionally with patients, families, staff, physicians, students, and volunteers.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and request guidance and consultation.
  • Competence to provide safe, high-quality, compassionate care appropriate to the level of formal education and organizational requirements.
  • Critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, problem solving, and evaluation skills, appropriate to the level of formal education.
  • Respectful behavior that conveys dignity toward all persons.
  • Organizational and time-management skills.
  • An excellent attendance record.
Responsibilities
  • Practice under the direct or indirect supervision of a healthcare professional in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and the College of Nurses of Ontario practice guideline for working with unregulated care providers.
  • Assist with activities of daily living, including feeding, toileting, bathing, and dressing, to support and optimize patient independence and functioning.
  • Assist with mobility, including lifting, turning, positioning, transfers, and ambulation.
  • Provide measures to maintain skin integrity.
  • Answer patient call bells.
  • Take patients’ vital signs, height, and weight.
  • Assist with comfort measures and participate in comfort rounds.
  • Contribute to care planning and implement existing care-plan interventions under the direction of a nurse.
  • Provide activation, companionship, and social engagement.
  • Report changes in patient status and safety concerns to a supervising nurse.
  • Perform falls risk, pain, Braden Scale, and Confusion Assessment Method assessments.
  • Perform other care activities appropriate to the clinical area and patient population.
  • Document care provided and notify supervising healthcare professionals of findings.
  • Upon completing the Clinical Extern Competency Test and educational orientation, final-year or final-semester externs may accept delegation for point-of-care glucose testing.
