Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required.
- BOC certification and state athletic training licensure, certification, or registration are required.
- An NPI number is required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required.
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required.
- The ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion is required.
- The ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others is required.
- The ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment is required.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive or episodic health histories and physical assessments of patients with acute, chronic, or potential injuries and illnesses.
- Take thorough patient histories, including chief complaint, vital signs, pain score, mechanism of injury, past medical history, and review of systems.
- Perform physical examinations, including range-of-motion testing, strength and manual muscle testing, neurovascular and sensation testing, palpation, special and ligamentous testing, and functional testing.
- Review preparticipation physical evaluation forms according to Florida High School Athletic Association or organizational guidelines, update the electronic record-keeping system with clearance, or facilitate referral for clearance.
- Perform and document baseline testing according to organizational requirements, such as concussion testing.
- Provide patient education, answer questions, and instruct patients on rehabilitation exercises.
- Fit patients with splints, crutches, braces, wraps, and other orthopedic appliances or durable medical equipment, and educate patients on proper use.
- Perform wound care, gait training, and splint application and removal.
- Document patient encounters and communicate with patients, staff, and providers in electronic medical records.
- Serve as a preceptor, mentor, and/or supervisor for students observing, shadowing, and obtaining clinical experience in sports medicine.
- Develop plans for providing athletic training services and carrying out event coverage.
- Develop comprehensive venue- and event-specific emergency action plans.
- Establish working relationships with coaches, athletic directors, school nurses, and other applicable staff.
- Maintain a functional and sanitary remote work location.
- Provide guidance to sports administrators, coaches, athletes, parents, and organizational groups regarding healthcare-related topics.
- Monitor supply inventory at remote work locations and work with appropriate contacts to maintain inventory and order supplies or equipment as necessary.
- Communicate medical support staff coverage needs and collaborate on and execute marketing initiatives with the Outreach Coordinator or Supervisor.
- Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
- Provide athletic training services at assigned outreach sites, such as local schools and sport clubs, and assist with patient care at various Department of Orthopaedics locations and providers as needed.
