Bedrock Ocean Exploration provides marine surveying using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to map nearshore seafloor. It collects high-resolution data with tools like multi-beam and side-scan sonar and magnetometers, then manages and interprets that data to deliver detailed maps and insights for environmental groups, government agencies, and private marine operators. Its data-first approach and goal to publish a world-scale ocean map 50 times more detailed than current public maps set it apart, aiming to improve global ocean understanding. The company earns revenue by delivering comprehensive marine surveys and data interpretation, and expands capabilities through partnerships with Exail and NORBIT Subsea to reduce costs and risks.

Bedrock appoints former Satellogic executive as CEO to drive growth in automated maritime surveillance. Apr 07, 2026, 10:20 ET Bedrock Adapts to Meet Growing Demand in Defense, Energy, and Environmental Monitoring Sectors in the U.S. and Europe. RICHMOND, Calif., April 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Bedrock Ocean Exploration, a leader in automated underwater data and intelligence, today announced the appointment of Matthew Tirman as CEO, as the company builds on major deployments and increasing demand in global offshore markets. Mr. Tirman brings over twenty years of experience in developing high-tech companies in geospatial intelligence, data platforms, and high-growth global commercial operations. Previously, he contributed to the leadership of Satellogic, which achieved early commercial traction, generated tens of millions in revenue, and went public. Under his guidance, Satellogic provided cutting-edge imaging and data products to defense and intelligence sector clients worldwide, as well as sales of complex space systems including a large-scale maritime constellation. As CEO, he will lead Bedrock's strategy, market execution, and operational growth. Founder Charles Chiau will remain Chief Technology Officer, focusing on hardware and software advancements as Bedrock enters its next phase of innovation by delivering AI-driven automated underwater intelligence for businesses and government clients globally. 'The opportunity before us is enormous,' said Mr. Tirman, Bedrock's new CEO. 'It feels like the early days of the space economy, where access to high-quality data unlocked entirely new markets. Today, we are supporting sustained operations in complex offshore environments in the Gulf of Mexico, the UK, and the North Sea, and we are seeing exceptionally strong demand from both government and commercial sectors.' Bedrock is building the largest private fleet of automated underwater vehicles, serving offshore energy, hydrographic mapping, and maritime security sectors. Its vertically integrated platform with multi-sensor underwater data can be deployed without specialized infrastructure and operate in a wide range of offshore environments, from small vessels to large ships. Bedrock's Mosaic platform provides seamless data access, visualization, and collaboration, while Trident supports remote fleet operations and mission coordination, enabling faster surveys, reduced costs, and more reliable data than traditional methods. 'Having served as both CEO and CTO during our initial growth, I am excited to continue innovating and redefining how maritime intelligence is collected and delivered,' said Mr. Chiau, Bedrock's founder and CTO. 'With Matt leading commercialization, I will focus on advancing our dual-use technical roadmap to further increase the speed of knowledge access for our clients.' 'Access to high-quality seabed data has always been slow, costly, and complex,' said Greg Sands, founder and managing partner of Costanoa. 'As demand accelerates in energy, defense, and environmental monitoring, Bedrock is redefining what is possible with a faster, safer, and more cost-effective approach to underwater intelligence.' About Bedrock Ocean Exploration Bedrock Ocean Exploration is building a new era of planetary intelligence. By combining a fleet of automated underwater vehicles with embedded AI, onboard processing, and cloud-based data platforms, Bedrock delivers high-resolution underwater intelligence faster, at lower cost, and on a global scale. Its vertically integrated approach enables governments and commercial operators to better understand, protect, and manage critical ocean infrastructure, advance maritime security, and foster climate and environmental understanding. Bedrock Ocean, a startup focused on advancing ocean mapping technology, has successfully raised $25 million in a Series A-2 funding round.
Bedrock Ocean has secured $25M in a Series A-2 funding round led by Primary and Northzone, with participation from Autopilot, Costanoa Ventures, Harmony Partners, Katapult, and Mana Ventures. The company has developed autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to map the ocean floor more efficiently and with less environmental impact than traditional ships. These AUVs operate independently, use less powerful sonar, and transmit data via Starlink, attracting interest from sectors like offshore wind and the U.S. Navy.
There are a number of startups racing to map the ocean in greater detail, but the latest to snag fresh funding is Bedrock Ocean, which recently closed a $25 million Series A-2 round led by Primary and Northzone, the company exclusively told TechCrunch.
