Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and one year of closely related clinical experience, or training/coursework in optometry, ophthalmology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology, basic tonometry, ophthalmic equipment maintenance, and simple repairs, as well as ocular injuries and the urgent care required.
  • Basic knowledge of ocular pharmacology, including the purpose, administration, dosage, duration, common side effects, and hospital shelf-life policies for drops and medications used in eye examinations.
  • CPR certification, or the ability to obtain CPR certification within 30 days, is required.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification by the Joint Commission of Allied Health in Personnel Ophthalmology registry or another nationally recognized professional certifying body is required upon hire.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate work assignments for ophthalmic technicians at assigned locations to optimize clinic flow.
  • Provide regular feedback on technician performance to the leadership team.
  • Lead training and skill monitoring at assigned locations.
  • Perform medical record review, visit preparation, patient education, and assistance with medical examinations, treatments, and procedures.
  • Maintain a presence on the clinic floor, address and troubleshoot clinic problems, foster end-of-session feedback, create and update provider workup responsibilities, lead regular team huddles, and provide clinic coverage as needed.
  • Maintain equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and maintain a clean, sterile environment by sterilizing and disinfecting instruments and equipment.
  • Lead technician training, monitor technician skills, document technician reviews, mentor new employees, and provide onboarding.
  • Perform ocular history, vital signs, visual acuity, neutralized glasses, automated refractions, pupillary examinations, confrontational fields, ocular motility, intraocular pressure, and other ophthalmic examinations and testing as needed.
  • Ensure rooms are cleaned and stocked and assign activities to other staff.
  • Provide leadership with feedback regarding staffing concerns, performance issues, training needs, and organizational improvement opportunities.
  • Assist with organizing technician activities to increase employee engagement and assess technician supply and demand with departmental leadership.
