Overview
- The Systems Architect will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation’s mission by designing and overseeing the implementation of complex technical solutions that support the mission-critical systems in a public health organization. This role is aligned to the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI). WAI is a federally funded CDC Foundation program with the goal of helping the nation’s public health agencies by providing them with the technology and data experts they need to accelerate their information system improvements. Working within the Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health, the Data Warehouse Architect will work closely with data engineers and other stakeholders to ensure our data systems are reliable, efficient, and scalable. This role encompasses planning data modernization efforts, as well as hands-on responsibilities in areas such as data warehouse house design, data architecture, data integration, database administration, data process automation, reliability, and support activities associated with the Data Modernization effort. The Systems Architect will be hired by the CDC Foundation and assigned to the Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health. This position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for U.S.-based candidates.
Responsibilities
- System Architecture and Data Warehouse Architecture:
- Develop and implement scalable and efficient data warehouse architectures that support business intelligence, analytics, and reporting needs.
- Design and manage Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to ensure data integration and consistency across multiple sources.
- Define data models, schemas, and database structures to optimize data storage and retrieval.
- Collaborate with data architects to design and implement scalable and secure data storage solutions, including data warehouses and data lakes.
- Develop and maintain data models, schemas, and structures to optimize data storage and retrieval.
- Recommend and implement new technologies, tools, and frameworks to enhance system performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Provide expertise and leadership in technology architecture with a focus in technical (including infrastructure and networks) and application architecture, strategy, road mapping, and methodology.
- Contribute to and manage the planning, design, delivery and implementation of user-centric solutions related to large scale, complex products required to meet the critical business requirements.
- SQL Server Database and Systems Administration:
- Monitor the management and maintenance of SQL Server databases ensuring optimal performance, security, and data integrity.
- Monitor and tune SQL Server performance including query optimization, indexing, and partitioning.
- Perform system performance tuning, capacity planning, and scalability assessments.
- Ensure security, compliance, and regulatory requirements are integrated into the system architecture.
- Support & Troubleshooting:
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for systems and data warehouse - related issues, collaborating with IT teams and end-users to resolve problems promptly.
- Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps for reference and knowledge sharing.
- Stay updated with industry trends and advancements in systems and data warehousing technologies to recommend improvements and innovations
- Identifies proactive measures to reduce incidents of failure and to increase sustainability and maintainablity of data systems.
- Evaluate existing systems and technologies to identify opportunities for improvement and optimization.
- DevOps:
- Develop and maintain automated data pipelines using DevOps/DataOps principles and tools (e.g., Git, CI/CD pipelines).
- Automate data tasks and processes to improve efficiency and reduce manual errors, leveraging scripting languages and automation tools. Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments for proposed architectural changes or initiatives.
- Data Governance:
- Implement data governance tools and practices to ensure data quality, consistency, and compliance with relevant regulations.
- Utilize data governance platforms (e.g., Collibra, Informatica, Alation) to manage metadata, data lineage, and data stewardship.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent)
- Experience: 5+ years in data systems architecture, design, implementation and data warehouse architecture experience.
- Architecture: Deep knowledge of system architecture, modern architectural patterns, cloud-based solutions, and security best practices.
- Database Management: Extensive experience with SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Snowflake; performance tuning, backup/recovery, and security management.
- Technical Expertise: Proficiency in ETL tools, data modeling, and database performance tuning; experience with orchestration tools like Apache Airflow, and integration tools such as SSIS, Talend, or Informatica.
- Development Skills: Hands-on experience with programming languages (Python, Java, JavaScript), modern JavaScript frameworks (Node.js, React, Vue), and mobile development.
- Testing: Experience in designing and writing automated test scripts for unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.
- Project Management: Expertise in feasibility studies, system architecture reviews, and developing solutions for complex, multi-year plans.
- Problem Solving: Ability to resolve complex integration and technical issues and adapt to evolving project requirements.
- Soft Skills: Strong analytical thinking, communication, and teamwork abilities; experience working in diverse, virtual environments.
