Requirements
- A high-school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Successful completion of conversation and translation competency testing in Spanish is required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
Responsibilities
- Perform face-to-face interpretation for medical appointments.
- Provide phone and video interpretation.
- Translate documentation for providers and clinicians.
- Serve as a neutral conduit of information between Duke staff and non-English-speaking patients and visitors.
- Accurately communicate information about outpatient services, hospitalization, advance directives, treatment consents, diagnoses and prognoses, treatment plans, follow-up appointments, and health-care education.
- Address and document patients' questions and concerns according to Risk Management Directives.
- Maintain confidentiality of assignment-related and patient-care information.
- Convey the exact message without subjective summarization, and decline assignments when personal relationships could affect impartiality.
- Avoid providing personal opinions or counseling to patients.
- Decline assignments beyond professional skills, language fluency, or training level.
- Promote customer satisfaction related to Duke services and notify the supervisor of issues affecting patients or staff.
- Participate in continuing education and competency training.
- Follow policies and procedures for processes, services, and employee work rules.
Desired Qualifications
- Previous experience in a health-care setting is preferred.
