Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required, with grandfathering for nurses hired before December 2019.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing is required.
- At least one year of acute inpatient hospital experience as a registered nurse is required.
- The candidate must speak, read, and write English proficiently.
- The candidate must understand and perform medical procedures and manage clinical conditions, including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures, according to applicable policies and regulations.
- The candidate must demonstrate commitment to patient care and customer service.
- The candidate must work independently with minimal direction and supervision.
- A California Registered Nurse license is required.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Los Angeles City Fire Life Safety Training is required within 30 days of hire if the candidate does not have a card at hire, and it must be renewed before expiration.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
Responsibilities
- Use the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to patients as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Coordinate patient care and provide education to patients and families.
- Follow policies and procedures and access online manuals.
- Apply scientific nursing knowledge in practice.
- Complete nursing assessments on admission, each shift, and when patient condition changes, including daily patient acuity assessments.
- Interpret assessment information and formulate nursing diagnoses.
- Develop, document, review, revise, and update individualized plans of care based on patient outcomes.
- Administer medications and intravenous therapy at prescribed intervals.
- Perform patient care procedures correctly according to policy.
- Delegate tasks based on others’ scope of practice and competency.
- Advocate for patients and manage restraint use according to policy, including alternative measures, physician orders and assessments, monitoring, and restraint audits.
- Complete required documentation on flow sheets and chart forms, transcribe and sign orders before the end of the shift, and complete 12-hour and 24-hour chart checks.
- Provide patient and family education, including room or unit orientation, plans of care, diagnosis-related knowledge deficits, and MICROMEDEX information.
- Collaborate with the case manager and physician on discharge planning and complete transfer paperwork.
- Ensure patient belongings accompany the patient during transfers and discharge.
- Use patient-care equipment safely and appropriately, including intravenous, feeding, patient-controlled analgesia, epidural, sequential compression, wound vacuum, and heating pumps.
- Communicate with patients, families, physicians, students, employees, contractors, and healthcare team members through reports, rounds, handoffs, and facility email.
- Organize and prioritize responsibilities, take meal breaks without incurring overtime, and complete the shift on time.
- Follow regulatory and safety requirements, including patient identification, universal protocol, medication reconciliation, clinical alarms, hazardous waste management, HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission readiness, critical-value communication, electrical safety, infection control, and hand washing.
- Manage medical-surgical patients with total hip arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty, spinal surgery, cystic fibrosis, abdominal organ transplants, and hepatic encephalopathy.
- Manage complex critically ill intensive-care patients and advanced modalities including hemodynamic monitoring, continuous renal replacement therapy, ventriculostomy, intracranial pressure monitoring, ventricular assist devices, and balloon pumps.
- Manage high-acuity stepdown and telemetry patients and advanced modalities including ventilators, arterial and central venous pressure lines, ventricular assist devices, and lumbar drains.
- Initiate, perform, and terminate dialysis treatments; review orders and laboratory results; educate patients; complete treatment records and safety checks; maintain dialysis machines; and coordinate missing treatment orders with physicians.
- Manage psychiatric patients through therapeutic interactions, safety and contraband assessments, treatment planning, visitor monitoring, legal-status tracking, consented psychotropic medication administration, and firearm reporting.
- Apply behavioral restraint or seclusion when appropriate, continuously monitor patients, obtain required physician assessments and orders, notify the manager, contact significant others as permitted, and complete post-incident debriefing.
- Identify patients meeting core-measure criteria, complete core-measure documentation, and participate in data collection and process improvement related to nurse-sensitive quality indicators.
- Participate in professional hospital and nursing activities, including relief charge nurse duties, committees, councils, hospital teams, unit-based projects, and research.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
