Northwell Health one of 14 health systems recognized by Institute for Healthcare Improvement for older adult care. Dr. Maria Carney, pictured above, checks her patient's vital signs as part of the older adult care Northwell Health was recognized for by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Northwell Health has been named one of 14 health systems in the U.S. to receive the "Excellence in System-Wide Spread" recognition from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), a globally recognized leader in healthcare quality improvement. The healthcare system operates major facilities across Queens, including in Rego Park, Jackson Heights, Fresh Meadows, Flushing and Forest Hills. A news release from Northwell said the achievement underscores its success in implementing age-friendly care principles across its health system, which spans 21 hospitals, 64 ambulatory practices, home care services and skilled nursing facilities. The recognition from IHI, which is valid through 2029, acknowledges Northwell's work ensuring that older adults receive quality, person-centered care, regardless of setting. According to Northwell, this integrated approach positions it as a national leader in delivering evidence-based care to the nation's rapidly growing older adult population. Northwell's recognition came through IHI's 18-month Age-Friendly System-Wide Spread Collaborative, which convened 30 U.S. health systems to assess and refine methods for scaling age-friendly care delivery. According to projections from the U.S. Census Bureau, Americans aged 65 and older will outnumber those under 18 for the first time in U.S. history by 2034, making expertise in delivering age-friendly care increasingly critical to the nation's healthcare infrastructure. Northwell's age-friendly strategy is anchored in the evidence-based 4Ms Framework - What Matters, Medication, Mentation (Mind) and Mobility - which guides clinicians in addressing the essential elements of care for older patients: The health system aims to understand and align care with each patient's individual health outcome goals and care preferences; ensure medications are age-appropriate and do not interfere with patient goals, mobility or cognitive function; prevent, identify, treat and manage delirium, depression and dementia across all care settings; and assess physical abilities and create environments where older adults can move safely and maintain independence. "This is a pivotal moment for the Northwell Institute for Healthy Aging and our commitment to transforming care for older adults both within and beyond our health system," said Maria Carney, who is president of Glen Cove Hospital, executive director of the Northwell Institute for Healthy Aging and system chief of geriatrics and palliative medicine. "Research shows that when all 4Ms are provided together to each older adult, patient care and outcomes are improved. These interventions are thoughtful and practical approaches that dramatically improve safety and patient experience. Every older adult deserves to receive evidence-based, age-friendly care focused on what matters most to each individual." Northwell said it believes its broad scope of implementation is what distinguishes its achievement. By embedding the 4Ms across a continuum spanning emergency departments, outpatient clinics, home care and skilled nursing facilities, Northwell has created one of the country's largest coordinated models for delivering evidence-based age-friendly care. "IHI's recognition demonstrates the dedication of our entire team across Northwell to advance age-friendly principles at every level of our organization," said Susan Kwiatek, vice president of aging and supportive care at the institute. "By embedding the 4Ms consistently across our diverse care settings, we ensure that older adults receive personalized, dignified care that respects what matters most to them - whether they are in our hospitals, visiting our physician offices, receiving home care or residing in our skilled nursing facilities." Building sustainable digital prosthetic workflows in Guyana. Articles Jul 15, 2026 PVA Med recently partnered with Northwell Health to donate an Emergence PRO(TM) V3 3D Printer to the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre in Georgetown, Guyana. Along with the donation, its team spent two days providing hands-on training to help clinicians, technicians, and therapists confidently implement a sustainable digital prosthetic workflow. Rather than simply donating new technology, the goal was to build a workflow that clinicians could confidently continue using long after the training concluded. By focusing on practical solutions that complemented their existing clinical process, the team helped establish a foundation for long-term success. Building confidence through hands-on training. Training covered every step of the digital workflow, from scanning and model preparation to 3D printing and fitting a WalkStrong(TM) check socket. The first day focused on introducing the digital workflow while giving participants hands-on experience with scanning techniques, printer operation, and routine maintenance. On the second day, the team completed the entire process with an actual patient, allowing clinicians to practice scanning, printing, and fitting in a real clinical setting. This hands-on approach gave participants the confidence to begin incorporating digital fabrication into their existing workflow while immediately seeing the benefits in practice. Building on an existing workflow. One of the most important goals of the training was developing a workflow that fit the rehabilitation centre's current resources and day-to-day operations. Rather than replacing their traditional plaster process, clinicians learned how to continue using familiar casting and hand-modification techniques before scanning the finished plaster model into Rapid Plaster(R). From there, the WalkStrong(TM) attachment was added, and the check socket was produced using the Emergence PRO(TM) V3. This hybrid approach allows the rehabilitation centre to begin incorporating digital fabrication without completely changing the workflow they already know and trust, making adoption more practical and sustainable. Supporting long-term success. This project extends far beyond the initial training. Northwell Health will continue supporting the rehabilitation centre through ongoing collaboration, virtual follow-up meetings, and future on-site visits. This continued partnership helps ensure clinicians have the resources and guidance needed as they continue integrating digital fabrication into patient care. The rehabilitation centre also benefits from several advantages the Emergence PRO(TM) V3 brings to its clinical environment, including faster socket production, lighter check sockets, a compact footprint that fits within limited workspace, and the ability to produce components for rehabilitation devices beyond prosthetics, such as replacement parts for canes and wheelchairs. Looking ahead. By combining the Emergence PRO(TM) V3, Rapid Plaster(R), WalkStrong(TM), and comprehensive hands-on training, PVA Med and Northwell Health are helping establish a sustainable digital workflow that expands access to prosthetic and rehabilitation care in Guyana. This project reflects its commitment to supporting clinicians not only through innovative technology, but through education, collaboration, and long-term partnerships that create lasting impact. PVA Med is grateful to everyone at Northwell Health and the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre for their collaboration and look forward to continuing this important work together. Video Player
