Bloom Energy shares jump 5.1% after S&P 500 inclusion confirmed, UBS raises target to $325

Bloom Energy shares rose 5.1% to $265.70 in premarket trading after the company confirmed its addition to the S&P 500 Index, effective 21 September. The inclusion will require index-tracking funds and ETFs to adjust their holdings accordingly. Bloom Energy will be the first energy company added to the S&P 500 since 2022. UBS analyst Manav Gupta raised his price target to $325 from $300, maintaining a Buy rating, citing expectations of increased passive fund ownership following index membership. The development follows Bloom Energy's second-quarter 2026 results, which showed revenue of $1.07 billion, more than double the year-earlier period and exceeding Wall Street estimates. The company operates in the fuel cell and clean-power market.

With approximately 30% of the S&P 500 held in passive investment vehicles, any new entrant experiences automatic demand. This mechanism frequently generates upward price momentum even before official confirmation. Barron's identified additional potential candidates including Cheniere Energy (LNG), Everpure (P), Credo Technology (CRDO), Heico (HEI), Rocket (RKT), and Royalty Pharma (RPRX). SpaceX (SPCX) was excluded from consideration due to insufficient public trading history, falling short of the mandatory 12-month requirement. Scorpio X AI fabric switches began volume production earlier than anticipated, while PCIe 6.0 products now account for over 50% of quarterly revenue. Wall Street raises price expectations. Sell-side analysts have been revising their outlooks upward. Citi elevated its price target to $430. Roth Capital increased its forecast to $450. Northland upgraded ALAB to Outperform while establishing a $350 price objective. Prior to Friday's rally, the stock had declined more than 36% from its record high of $499.48. That pullback created an attractive entry point relative to the company's robust growth fundamentals. ALAB is scheduled to participate in the Citi 2026 Global TMT Conference on September 9, potentially generating additional institutional attention in the near term. Bloom Energy breaks out as AI data centers face 15GW power shortfall by 2027

Bloom Energy manufactures on-site power generators that convert natural gas, biogas, or hydrogen into electricity without combustion. The company's "Bloom Boxes" use an electrochemical process to deliver higher efficiency and lower emissions than traditional power sources. The technology addresses growing power demands from AI data centres. With grid-connection wait times exceeding five years, Bloom's behind-the-meter solution allows companies to generate their own electricity and contribute excess power back to the grid. Bloom Energy has shown rapid growth, with Q2 2026 revenue reaching $1.065 billion. The company has delivered an average earnings surprise of 164.10% over the past four quarters. In August, Nancy Pelosi disclosed owning 15,000 shares valued at over $10 million. The stock recently broke a multi-month downtrend on heavy volume.

Bloom Energy beats Eos Energy as better buy despite $1.75B loss and legal risks

Bloom Energy and Eos Energy Enterprises both serve the growing energy infrastructure sector, but target different markets. Bloom provides onsite power through solid oxide fuel cell technology for data centres and utilities, whilst Eos offers zinc-based long-duration energy storage for renewable energy grids. Bloom reported revenue exceeding $2 billion in fiscal 2025, representing approximately 37% growth, though it posted a net loss of roughly $88.4 million. The company maintains partnerships including a $5 billion financing framework with Brookfield. Eos achieved revenue of approximately $114.2 million in 2025, a 630% increase year-over-year, but reported a significantly wider net loss of nearly $1.75 billion as it ramped up commercial manufacturing. Both companies face distinct risks. Bloom contends with pending securities litigation and supply chain dependencies linked to China. Eos confronts ongoing losses, reliance on external capital, and competition from larger battery manufacturers. For 2026, Bloom expects revenue to leap 85% to $3.75 billion, driven by AI data centre demand. Eos projects revenue to more than double, with management citing a $25 billion business pipeline.
