  • Must have a good working knowledge of various circuit connections, voltage identification of lines, phasing, transformer connections and switching devices. Must know the fundamentals of electricity and have the ability to interpret field prints and switching diagrams, simple blueprints, one-line diagrams, instruction manuals and construction drawings
  • Must possess the ability to deal with employees, customers and the general public in a courteous and proper manner
  • Must have the ability to use a computer and electronic devices and write legibly and record accurately
  • Must be able to distinguish colors
  • Must have the ability to work aloft on poles, towers and structures, use various tools, and operate equipment and finger manipulation of bolts/screws, etc
  • Tolerate awkward or stretched positions while working aloft and suspended from safety belt
  • Must be able to work at heights of up to 250 feet
  • Must be able to lift 75lbs. overhead
  • Must demonstrate familiarity with Company safety rules and practices and be proficient in the application of resuscitation and first aid
  • Must possess the ability to plan work and to properly instruct others
Responsibilities
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of overhead distribution/transmission lines, structures and equipment while performing duties in accordance with the Company safety rules, regulations and practices and report unsafe conditions and practices.
  • During the first six months in this classification, shall be capable of working on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 volts under general supervision. Assist with work on conductors and equipment energized at secondary voltages to 600 volts under immediate supervision of higher classification.
  • After six months in this classification, shall be capable of working on conductors and equipment energized up to 600 volts under general supervision.
  • During the SMC classification, under direct supervision, the employee may operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers, and other sectionalizing devices, refuse line and transformer devices, test de-energized lines and equipment, and place or remove grounds. During this time frame, the employee may progress from direct supervision to immediate and finally general supervision as skill level dictates.
  • After 18 months in this classification, for the purpose of on-the-job training, may perform the duties of the first six months of the SMB classification when working under the direct supervision of an employee of higher classification.
  • Assemble, install, maintain, remove and inspect conductors, fixtures and other associated equipment on overhead and underground facilities.
  • Operate mechanized equipment required to install, remove or maintain overhead and underground transmission and distribution facilities.
  • Become familiar with the use and care of live line tools.
  • Become familiar with and use volt-amp meters, ground meggers, continuity testers and other electrical test equipment associated with line work on voltages up to 600 volts.
  • Load, unload, handle, install, maintain and remove poles, towers and structures.
  • Assemble and erect equipment mountings such as regulator and transformer platforms.
  • Apply various kinds of insulating protective equipment on facilities energized only at voltage qualified to work on.
  • Build overhead transformer installations.
  • Identify single and three-phase lines and determine their voltage and conductor size.
  • Become familiar with series and parallel circuits.
  • Gain poles in the air and install single, double and buck arms.
  • Perform inspection, troubleshooting of lines and report irregularities and abnormal conditions.
  • Familiar and able to maintain tools, equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintain records and submit reports as required.
  • Attend and participate in training as assigned and assist in the training of other employees.
  • Perform similar or less skilled work and assist employees of equal or higher classification.

May 27, 2026 Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has announced today the election of two new members to its Board of Trustees: Lisa Barton '87 and John Marczewski '85, P'23, both distinguished alumni whose careers reflect decades of leadership in complex organizations. Barton and Marczewski will begin their five-year terms on the board on July 1, 2026. "As WPI continues to advance its mission as a global leader in immersive STEM education and research, John and Lisa bring invaluable perspective shaped by technical expertise, executive leadership, and deep industry engagement," said William Fitzgerald '83, chair of the WPI Board of Trustees. Published March 27, 2026 at 8:49 PM EDT Business leaders and government officials flocked to southern Ohio last Friday to detail plans for a data center so large it needs a $33.3 billion, 9.2-gigawatt (GW) billion natural gas plant to power it. The groundbreaking event for the artificial intelligence data center had the pomp and circumstance of other tech announcements, where investment and job creation figures are rattled off between glossy videos, over hors d'oeuvres. When Intel broke ground in Licking County in 2022, it said it could be online by 2025. That aggressive timeline for its semiconductor manufacturing facilities has since been delayed to 2030 and 2031. "That was a government subsidized CHIPS deal that was a mess from the beginning," Moreno said. This, Moreno said in a Statehouse News Bureau interview Thursday, is "very different." "It's fully funded, SoftBank has committed the money." Moreno said. "I committed to southeast Ohio that I would never forget them. We have to unleash prosperity there, and this is going to do that, and you have just seen the beginning of how this is going to go." The facilities, including the behemoth proposed 10-GW data center, will be constructed in stages on revitalized U.S. Department of Energy land in Piketon, where the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant was. There, the former enrichment buildings are in various stages of demolition. As of March, some are nothing but rubble. SB Energy, a subsidiary of Tokyo-based SoftBank, will lead the project. It will also invest $4.2 billion in new transmission lines across southern Ohio with American Electric Power (AEP) Ohio. SB Energy was attracted to Piketon because of the high density of the existing transmission infrastructure, among other reasons, according to an official. To start, the SB Energy official said it will invest $10 billion in an 800-megawatt data center, creating 4,000 construction jobs and 300 to 400 full-time jobs.

SoftBank and AEP announce $33B natural gas power plant in Ohio to fuel AI data centres

Japan's SoftBank Group and American Electric Power have announced a $33.3 billion partnership to build a 9.2-gigawatt natural gas power plant on federal land in Portsmouth, Ohio. The facility will power a new data centre as part of the AI infrastructure boom. The project will be located at a former Cold War uranium enrichment site that the US has spent billions decontaminating. SB Energy is also investing $4.2 billion with AEP Ohio to upgrade transmission lines in southern Ohio. The investment forms part of a wider US-Japan trade deal struck in October 2025, which committed $550 billion across nuclear power, rare earth minerals and other projects to reduce China's dominance in electronic components. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the government is leveraging federal lands to boost power generation and maintain AI leadership.

Brian Abraham named president and COO of Appalachian Power, Aaron Walker moves to nuclear role

American Electric Power has appointed Brian Abraham as president and chief operating officer of Appalachian Power, effective 13 April. Abraham, currently chief of staff to West Virginia Senator Jim Justice, will oversee operations serving West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. Abraham succeeds Aaron Walker, who moves to vice president of Engineering and Quality for AEP's Nuclear Development organisation. Walker brings over 20 years of industry experience to the role, where he will help develop advanced nuclear solutions. A West Virginia native and retired brigadier general, Abraham previously served as general counsel for the Justice Administration and prosecuting attorney for Logan County. He holds degrees from Fairmont State University, the US Army War College and West Virginia University. AEP serves 5.6 million customers across 11 states.
