Requirements
  • A current approved Alabama Board of Nursing Registered Nurse license or a multistate license is required, or the candidate must be able to obtain one before starting.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training is required.
  • A minimum associate degree is required.
  • The candidate must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Provider certification is required for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within six months of the start date.
  • The candidate must demonstrate leadership, decision-making, clear communication, delegation, conflict management, and the ability to work under time pressure.
  • The candidate must be able to use electronic mail, telephone, texting, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
  • The candidate must be able to work onsite, tolerate prolonged standing and walking, lift and carry objects, and perform physical duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • The candidate must be able to work prolonged shifts and every other weekend, including Saturday and Sunday.
Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct quality, compassionate patient care while maintaining professional nursing practice standards and therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Supervise LPNs, patient care assistants, unit secretaries, orthopedic technicians, and other non-licensed staff.
  • Assess each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, and discharge-planning needs.
  • Plan, provide, and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
  • Evaluate and reevaluate patient care and coordinate care planning with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
  • Assign and delegate nursing care to team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities.
  • Apply safety principles when performing care.
  • Accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
  • Provide accurate handoff reports and participate in unit-based huddles.
  • Assist with performance-improvement activities by serving on performance-improvement teams, assisting with measures, and supporting and implementing necessary changes.
  • Perform initial and annual competency assessments for the applicable job class.
  • Maintain patient and employee satisfaction, performance, financial, compliance, behavioral, and safety standards in accordance with DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices and take appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
