- An Associate degree from an approved Respiratory Care program is required; for individuals licensed before December 31, 2008, a certificate of completion from an approved Respiratory Care program is accepted.
- Must be eligible for the National Board for Respiratory Care Registered Respiratory Therapist examination under National Board for Respiratory Care guidelines.
- Basic computer and mechanical training is required.
- Must maintain a Certified Respiratory Therapist license.
- Must possess and maintain a current Alabama Respiratory Therapy license issued by the Alabama State Board of Respiratory Therapy, or a valid temporary Respiratory Therapist license or permit authorized by the Alabama State Board of Respiratory Therapy.
- Team members practicing under a temporary license or permit must obtain permanent licensure within the timeframe established by the Board.
- Certified Respiratory Therapists registered on or after July 1, 2002, must maintain active status with the National Board for Respiratory Care and update it every five years.
- Must maintain current Basic Life Support or Healthcare Provider certification.
- Advanced Life Support is required as appropriate for the unit and site.
- Must be eligible for the National Board of Respiratory Care Certified Respiratory Therapist examination under National Board of Respiratory Care guidelines.
- Assess, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders.
- Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures.
- Maintain patient records and accurate documentation.
- Select, assemble, check, and operate respiratory care equipment.
- Demonstrate competency in respiratory therapeutics and in the use of non-invasive ventilatory, pulmonary diagnostic, and other equipment required for respiratory care.
- Apply analytical reasoning and blend patient care management skills with technical expertise.
- Communicate openly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
- Perform quality control and maintenance of arterial blood gas analyzers, including specimen collection and analysis of blood for gas transport and acid/base determinations.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with applicable policies and standards.
- Maintain compliance with Baptist Health policies and procedures.
- Provide care appropriate to the patient's age and medical condition.
- Administer medical gases and provide environmental control systems, humidification, medical delivery, non-invasive ventilatory support, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Instruct clinical practicum students.
- Apply knowledge of growth and development across the life span, assess patient-status data, identify age-specific needs, and provide care according to unit, area, and department policies and procedures.
- Active membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care is preferred.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate for the age of patients served on the assigned unit.
