Announcing the move on LinkedIn, he reflected on closing a nine-year chapter with the two organisations, expressing gratitude for the experiences and opportunities gained during his tenure. Karan Bhatia has embarked on a new professional journey, joining Asahi Group as Director-AGPS after nearly a decade with Sanofi and its subsidiary Opella. The development was shared by Bhatia in a LinkedIn update, where he confirmed his departure from the pharmaceutical giant and expressed appreciation for the formative years he spent across the two organisations. "Last week, I closed a professional chapter of nine years with Sanofi & Opella. I'm grateful for my time in these two world-class organisations," he wrote, signalling both the end of a significant tenure and the beginning of a fresh chapter with Asahi Group. Bhatia's move marks a notable shift from the healthcare and pharmaceutical sector to the global beverage industry, underscoring the breadth of his professional expertise and adaptability. Sanofi, a multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Paris, and Opella, its consumer healthcare arm, provided him with a platform to contribute to diverse markets and complex business environments. His nine-year association with the two companies reflects a period of sustained growth and leadership, during which he played a role in advancing business strategies and operational excellence. The transition to Asahi Group, a leading Japanese beverage and food company with a strong international footprint, positions Bhatia within a dynamic sector known for innovation and global consumer engagement. As Director-AGPS, he is expected to bring his extensive experience in corporate leadership, strategic planning and cross-sectoral collaboration to strengthen Asahi's global operations. Industry observers note that such cross-sectoral moves are increasingly common among senior executives, reflecting the convergence of skills required across industries. Bhatia's background in healthcare and pharmaceuticals equips him with a unique perspective on consumer needs, regulatory frameworks and international business practices, which are highly relevant to the fast-evolving beverage industry. His announcement has drawn attention within professional circles, with peers and colleagues acknowledging his contributions to Sanofi and Opella while extending best wishes for his new role. The move also highlights the growing trend of leaders leveraging their expertise across diverse industries to drive transformation and growth. For Asahi Group, the appointment underscores its commitment to strengthening leadership capabilities and enhancing its global strategy. For Bhatia, it represents both continuity and change: continuity in his pursuit of impactful leadership, and change in embracing new challenges within a different sector. The Week in Health: Hospital investment, Cyclospora Outbreak.

The Week in Health: Hospital investment, Cyclospora Outbreak. By Sergio Arturo Lievano Madrigal | Journalist - Fri, 07/24/2026 - 09:59 DIA assistant Mexico's health sector moved on two fronts this week: public infrastructure spending and private manufacturing investment both accelerated, while a cross-border food safety scare tested coordination with the FDA. Meanwhile, a cholesterol drug approval and an insurtech's growth rounded out a week defined by expanding access to care. Ready? This is the Week in Health! Mexico Unveils MX$181 Billion Hospital Infrastructure Plan The government will invest close to MX$181 billion through 2030 to build, expand, or replace 152 public hospitals, growing the IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS Bienestar network past 106,000 beds. The plan responds to long-documented funding disparities across Mexico's fragmented public health subsystems. Mexico Modernizes Public Hospitals as Medical Device Market Grows ISSSTE's MX$298 million investment in electric beds and operating room upgrades coincides with LINET Group's new Santa Fe headquarters, signaling sustained demand for medical equipment. Together, the moves point to a multi-front procurement cycle spanning commodity and specialized devices alike. Mexico Investigates Cyclospora Outbreak Mexican authorities activated a joint task force with the FDA to investigate a cyclospora outbreak linked to lettuce from Guanajuato-based supplier Taylor Farms. The case carries real stakes for Mexico's vegetable export sector, which sends nearly 96% of its output to the United States. FDA Approves Merck Oral Pill for High Cholesterol The US FDA approved Lipfendra, Merck's first-in-class oral PCSK9 inhibitor, aimed at the 70% of statin patients who still miss their cholesterol targets. The approval carries relevance for Mexico, where cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of mortality. Opella Expands Enterogermina Production Line in State of Mexico Opella inaugurated a MX$1.2 billion production line in Ocoyoacac, part of a MX$2.3 billion plan to raise local manufacturing for the domestic market to 80%. The project positions the site as a global backup facility and is expected to create 500 direct and indirect jobs. Disrupting Mexican Healthcare Through Tech-Driven InsurTech Mutuus' Jean-Louis Brunet tells MBN the insurtech now serves 14,000 members through a zero-deductible, direct-payment model targeting Mexico's underserved middle class. He says recent IVA tax changes forced a 23% workforce cut, even as the company grows more than 40% annually.

Following rigorous qualification and regulatory approvals, the new production line will progressively scale operations to bring the product to shelves across the Americas in the 2027-2028 period. Opella Mexico general manager, Luis Soares, said: "With this new production line, Logistics Manager is strengthening Mexico's role as a strategic platform for advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing and exports to Latin America. Opella shifts Enterogermina production to Mexico.

Opella shifts Enterogermina production to Mexico. 23 July, 2026 Opella has transferred production of its flagship probiotic Enterogermina from Italy to Mexico, marking a major milestone in the company's manufacturing strategy for the Americas. The move is supported by a US$70 million investment in a new production line at its Ocoyoacac facility in the State of Mexico, part of a broader US$135 million expansion plan running through 2028. The expansion transforms the Ocoyoacac plant into the company's second global manufacturing hub for Enterogermina, complementing its long-established facility in Origgio, Italy. For the first time, the Mexican site will produce both the active pharmaceutical ingredient and the finished product, bringing advanced manufacturing capabilities that were previously concentrated in Europe. The new production line adds an annual capacity of 200 million mini-bottles, enabling Opella to meet growing demand across Latin America while strengthening the resilience of its global supply network. Company executives said producing closer to key markets will improve supply chain efficiency and support faster regional distribution. As production ramps up, the share of Opella products sold in Mexico that are manufactured locally will increase from 60% to 80%. The company also expects the facility to play a larger role as an export platform, supplying multiple Latin American markets from Mexico. Beyond expanding manufacturing capacity, the investment includes a significant transfer of industrial expertise and production technology. According to the company, the project equips the Mexican operation with specialized know-how and quality systems required to manufacture one of the world's leading probiotic brands under the same standards applied in Europe. The Ocoyoacac facility also supports Opella's sustainability objectives. The site operates with 100% renewable electricity, has significantly reduced carbon emissions over the past several years, and follows a zero-waste-to-landfill model, aligning manufacturing expansion with the company's environmental commitments. With the relocation of Enterogermina production, Mexico assumes a more strategic role within Opella's global manufacturing network, reinforcing the country's position as an emerging pharmaceutical production and export hub for the Americas.
