Requirements
  • Typically five or more years of related experience as a professional, financial, and/or specialty lines underwriter.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional, financial, and/or specialty lines underwriting policies, practices, and procedures, insurance law, and underwriting marketing principles and techniques.
  • Strong understanding of financial documents, financial analysis, investments, and market conditions.
  • Understanding of employment principles and practices.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with internal and external business partners at all levels.
  • Ability to influence and negotiate with internal and external business partners at all levels.
  • Ability to manage large programs and develop and apply innovative approaches to program initiatives and problem solutions.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret mathematical, statistical, and logical data and evaluate its reliability and significance.
  • Project and process management skills.
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze, and devise solutions to complex programs, implement appropriate solutions, and monitor their effectiveness.

Responsibilities
  • Drive the sales and underwriting relationship for Programs products and services.
  • Provide input and data to help drive and implement strategic underwriting plans.
  • Provide business forecasting related to trends and profitability within the Program vertical.
  • Achieve established goals for assigned programs.
  • Analyze program manager relationships and results and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
  • Understand business needs and identify new business opportunities.
  • Review highly complex individual risks, programs, or referrals and accept or decline business based on the information necessary to make the decision.
  • Analyze exposures to losses and develop adequate premium charges for exposures.
  • Determine appropriate endorsements and exclusions to address loss exposures for insurance contracts.
  • Engage in discussions with reinsurers and verify the appropriate use of treaty, semiautomatic, and facultative reinsurance facilities.
  • Compile data for reinsurer presentations and maintain working relationships with reinsurers.
  • Develop and implement underwriting guidelines, rates, forms, product endorsements, and procedures.
  • Assist in developing department policies and underwriting methodologies.
  • Interact with claims, actuarial, compliance, and other business partners to achieve company goals and objectives.
  • Resolve escalated issues and communicate with business liaisons and external sources regarding program initiatives.
  • Audit individual risks and programs for compliance with company guidelines, state regulations, and reinsurance conditions.
  • Develop and implement action plans and resolve advanced complex technical issues.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with Program Managers to generate growth and profitability.
  • Travel to existing and potential Program Manager offices for marketing visits as required.
  • Lead the implementation of new programs, including underwriting guidelines, form and rate filings, compliance and regulatory matters, finance, reinsurance, claims, legal, accounting, actuarial, and marketing matters.
  • Attend industry functions to promote the programs team's brand and capabilities and identify new program business opportunities.
  • Provide direction, training, and guidance to less experienced staff.
  • Maintain knowledge of insurance regulations and provide consulting regarding legislation impacting the organization.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with U.S. or international financial lines, commercial management liability, cyber, and/or professional liability.
  • Program leadership experience in professional lines of business.
  • Experience in the technical aspects of data management, imaging, procedures, and processes.
  • Legal knowledge related to insurance, contract, and business law.
  • A graduate degree.
