The Principal Advanced Manufacturing Engineer (AME) will function as a key member of the Operations Extended team working on New Product Development (NPD) initiatives for Advanced Surgical Technologies and Global Operations and Supply Chain function.
The Principal AME will be primarily responsible for manufacturing assembly line and assembly tooling/equipment development for new products to meet or exceed project Time to Market (TTM) goals and operational metrics. General responsibilities will include deliverables in the areas of Manufacturing, Assembly Tooling, Manufacturing Engineering, and New Product Line Start-up, including Assembly and Test Equipment validation and qualification, associated with the development and commercialization of new surgical devices.
The Principal AME will work under the direction of an Advanced Engineering Manager in a fast paced collaborative environment supportive of program initiatives and compliant with company best practices. They are a subject matter expert in mechatronics, equipment, equipment design, and manufacturing process troubleshooting. In addition, they also serve to mentor and guide associate level, mid-level Engineers, and interns to assist with the completion of program related tasks and objectives.
Design manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining and material handling.
Lead Assembly Tooling and Equipment strategy for new production lines.
Participate in DFMEA, CTQ, and FTQ processes to assure that product and assembly specifications are clearly defined and documented; and in and/or reviews DFM and DFA activities to support early product and process development and quality planning.
Support the Capital Expense Request (CER) process, specifying costs for Assembly and Packaging Equipment, and Test Fixtures, with consideration to product standard cost targets and capacity demands.
Consult for product commercialization strategy, including make versus buy analyses, manufacturing site selection, component supplier selections and tooling strategies.
Support assembly and test equipment validations and qualifications including FAT, SAT, IQ/OQ/PQ, and MSA studies.
Troubleshoot and develop solutions to address Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) for New Product Development programs/equipment.
Advise Management of any unmitigated risks and/or developments that could affect schedule, standard cost, or revenue.
Lead AME group’s awareness of new technology advances associated with production process development and assembly and test equipment including data collection and vision systems
Requires some travel to manufacturing sites and supplier visits.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 5 years relevant experience
Nice to Have
BS or MS in Engineering.
Strong experience with medium to high volume assembly and test equipment technologies, including validation protocols (IQ / CQ / OQ / PQ / MSA).
Experience and knowledge of vision systems controls including programming and troubleshooting (Cognex – preferred).
Exceptional Project Management and Team Leadership skills.
Demonstrated knowledge in: DFM & DFA principles, DFMEA and PFMEA, GD&T, and defining and procuring assembly equipment and tooling including troubleshooting
Strong familiarity with statistical analyses, including process capability, process control, Design of Experiments, etc.
Understanding of Industrial Engineering tools including balance tables, process flow diagrams, line layouts, ergonomic workstation designs, etc.
Ability to work across global business unit and/or locations.
Strong computer, communication, and presentation skills.
Trained/Certified in Lean and/or 6 Sigma
3D Modeling/CAD experience (Creo – Preferred)

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$118,400.00 - $177,600.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
