Burlington plans Philadelphia HQ with $370 million investment.

Burlington plans Philadelphia HQ with $370 million investment. PHILADELPHIA, PA - Burlington Stores Inc. will relocate its corporate headquarters to Philadelphia and invest $370 million in the project, a move expected to create at least 2,000 Pennsylvania jobs over five years with $30 million in state support, Gov. Josh Shapiro's administration announced Thursday. The off-price retailer is purchasing property at 3151 Market Street in West Philadelphia for its new headquarters, placing another Fortune 500 company in the city's Schuylkill Yards development. Pennsylvania offered Burlington a $20 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant and a $10 million Pennsylvania First grant through the Department of Community and Economic Development. Philadelphia is providing additional incentives, including a $7 million forgivable loan and a Job Creation Tax Credit award. SEPTA and the Philadelphia Parking Authority also offered discounted commuting programs for Burlington employees. The relocation represents one of Philadelphia's more significant recent corporate recruitment wins, shifting Burlington's headquarters into a major mixed-use development near University City while adding a large employment base to the city. Discover more Access Premium News Download Interactive Maps Burlington Chief Executive Officer Michael O'Sullivan said the company considered multiple locations before choosing Philadelphia, citing its workforce and infrastructure among the factors behind the decision. "We were strongly attracted to the energy, talent, and infrastructure that Philadelphia has to offer," O'Sullivan said. Burlington operated 1,300 stores in 47 states as of Aug. 1, including more than 43 locations in the Philadelphia designated market area, according to the governor's office. The company's headquarters will be located at Schuylkill Yards, the West Philadelphia development owned by Brandywine Realty Trust. Shapiro characterized the project as part of Pennsylvania's strategy of using targeted public incentives to compete for private investment and corporate jobs. "Burlington is a fast-growing Fortune 500 company and they have committed to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in our economy and create 2,000 new jobs in our Commonwealth," Shapiro said, describing the move as the city's largest headquarters relocation in years. Mayor Cherelle Parker said the headquarters workforce is expected to have a broader economic effect on University City and Philadelphia's central business areas as employees spend money at nearby businesses. "These employees will become part of the daily life of our central core and University City, working, shopping, dining and supporting businesses throughout Philadelphia," Parker said. The Burlington project adds to more than $43 billion in private-sector investments secured by Pennsylvania during the Shapiro administration that are associated with nearly 29,000 new jobs, according to the governor's office. Bucco criticizes New Jersey business climate after Burlington Stores announces headquarters move to Philadelphia.

Bucco criticizes New Jersey business climate after Burlington Stores announces headquarters move to Philadelphia. TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco is criticizing the state's business climate after Burlington Stores announced plans to move its corporate headquarters from Burlington County to Philadelphia. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced Thursday that Burlington Stores plans to invest $370 million to relocate its headquarters to Philadelphia. Bucco pointed to the move as evidence that New Jersey needs to change its economic policies. "Business friendly states like Pennsylvania are eating New Jersey's lunch because Governor Sherrill and the Trenton Democratic Majority refuse to lower taxes - plain and simple. While New Jersey Democrats celebrate minor league soccer teams in expensive taxpayer funded stadiums, Pennsylvania is lowering taxes, encouraging new investment, and bringing Garden State companies with them. "Don't just take our word for it, the Burlington Stores CEO said Philadelphia had the energy, talent, and infrastructure that attracted them to make this move. Our business climate is suffering, and this is further proof of its decline. At what point is enough going to be enough for Democrats to take this seriously and work with Republicans and our business community; because it is clear that Governor Sherrill and the Trenton Democratic Majority do not have a plan." Burlington Stores CEO Michael Sullivan said the company considered multiple options before choosing Philadelphia for its new corporate home. "We are very excited to be relocating our corporate headquarters to Philadelphia. We are one of the fastest growing retailers in America, and as we evaluated different options for our new corporate home, we were strongly attracted to the energy, talent, and infrastructure that Philadelphia has to offer." Bucco recently released a four-point economic plan that he says would improve New Jersey's business climate. He has also created a job-loss tracker on the New Jersey Senate Republicans' website to track job losses during Gov. Mikie Sherrill's administration.

Burlington relocates HQ from New Jersey to Philadelphia in $370M move after 50 years

Burlington Stores is relocating its corporate headquarters from New Jersey to Philadelphia after over 50 years in the state, as part of a $370 million investment. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced the move Thursday, with the state contributing $30 million to support the relocation. CEO Michael O'Sullivan said Burlington has outgrown its current Burlington Township location. The company estimates 2,000 jobs will be created in Philadelphia through "a combination of migration and growth" from its 8,000 New Jersey associates. Burlington stated the move doesn't reflect New Jersey's business climate and emphasised continued commitment to the state through its Logan facility, Edgewater Park distribution centre, and retail stores. However, New Jersey business leaders called it a significant loss, citing the state's 11.5% corporate tax rate compared to Pennsylvania's planned reduction to 4.9%.
