Wawa bets $7.5 million on Ohio expansion as convenience-store rivalry heats up. September 8, 2026 Wawa is pouring $7.5 million into a new Lebanon, Ohio, store as the Pennsylvania-born chain races to plant 60 locations across the state, putting it on a collision course with Buc-ee's. The convenience-store chain plans to open the Lebanon location on Friday, August 28, at 8 a.m., roughly 33 miles northeast of Cincinnati. The first 100 customers through the door will walk away with limited-edition shirts, a promotional move Wawa has used at other recent openings across Pennsylvania. Nick DeSantis, a managing partner involved in the project, told a local outlet the development was "really exciting." At $7.5 million, the Lebanon store signals that Wawa is spending real money to establish itself in a market far from its mid-Atlantic home turf. Sixty stores, five to eight years, one state. Ohio is not a side project for Wawa. The chain says it intends to open five to eight new Ohio stores every year for the next five to eight years, with a target of 60 total locations statewide. Nationally, Wawa plans to bring roughly 100 new stores online across the country in 2026 alone. That pace puts Wawa squarely in competition with Buc-ee's, the Texas-based travel-stop giant that now operates in more than a dozen states and has built a cult following around massive footprints, clean restrooms, and brisket counters. Where Buc-ee's has expanded by going big on the interstate, Wawa is betting on volume, smaller stores, closer together, woven into suburban corridors. Wawa traces its roots to 1902 and built its brand on the signature hoagies it introduced in the early 1970s and continued to refine through the 1980s. Many of its older East Coast locations still lack gas pumps, a limitation the chain is addressing by replacing outdated stores with modern builds. Two New Jersey locations are slated to be swapped out for refurbished versions, though Wawa has not disclosed a timeline for those projects. A Texas Roadhouse partnership points south. Ohio is not the only front. Wawa recently announced a partnership with Texas Roadhouse that will produce an all-in-one location in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, about 60 miles east of Raleigh. The pairing, a sit-down steakhouse attached to a gas-and-hoagie stop, is an unusual format for either brand and suggests Wawa is willing to experiment as it pushes into unfamiliar territory. No opening date for the Rocky Mount location has been announced. For consumers in southwestern Ohio, the Lebanon store is the more immediate development. A $7.5 million convenience store is a sizable bet on a single location, and Wawa is making dozens of them at once. Whether the chain can match the loyalty Buc-ee's commands, or carve out its own lane, will depend on whether the hoagies travel as well as the business plan. Competition is good for customers. If two chains want to fight over who sells you better coffee and a cleaner restroom, that is the free market doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Springboro Pike, near Austin Landing. The doors open at 8 a.m. with the first 100 customers receiving a free T-shirt. Free hot coffee will also be available. At 8:30 a.m., a ribbon-cutting will be held, officially welcoming the business to Miami Township.

(WFXR) - Wawa has called Virginia home for almost 30 years, but the franchise has yet to arrive in Southwest Virginia. That's set to change, as the new Wawa in Salem welcomed people inside for the first time. "Customers that live west would happen to be traveling, or they would be talking to us, or we would hear from them as they reached out to us, just for that desire for us to come westward," Kim Dowgielewicz, the director of store operations for Wawa across Virginia, said. "We finally feel like we're being able to reach the core market across Virginia." A group of people got to experience the "Taste of Wawa." They got a look inside the store and got to sample a bunch of the menu items. They even got a special visit from the company mascot, Wally the Goose. "I usually don't win anything when I post stuff on Facebook, but then I saw an invitation, and I was excited to be able to come," Salem resident Gail Smith said. "My dad did mystery shoppers until he was 90 at Wawa, and I've heard the food is delicious, and it's delicious today, and everyone was great." City officials stopped by, including Salem Mayor Renée Turk. She was invited to make the store's honorary first hoagie. "I was incredibly impressed with Mayor Turk, not only with her assembly of it, but just her excitement around it," Dowgielewicz said. "It was thrilling that she was here to support and be able to build that first hoagie for us." Wawa also celebrated its ongoing partnership with Feeding Southwest Virginia. Director of Volunteer Services Randy Holden said Wawa has donated around $20,000 over the past two years to Feeding Southwest's children's programs. "I want to say thank you to Wawa and the Wawa Foundation for supporting Feeding Southwest Virginia," Holden said. "We are grateful for your support for our children's feeding programs." Wawa will officially open on Thursday at 8:00 a.m. Wawa also plans to open store locations in Daleville, Lynchburg and Roanoke within the next year.
Wawa to open third New Hanover County store near Pender County line. 1 hour ago WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) - Wawa is preparing to open its third New Hanover County location, this time in the northern part of the county near the Pender County line. The new store, located at 9010 Senca Drive in Wilmington, is scheduled to open Thursday, Sept. 17. It sits next to Novant Health Scotts Hill Medical Center, placing it close to the New Hanover-Pender county border. The location will be Wawa's first in northern New Hanover County and is positioned to serve customers traveling between New Hanover and Pender counties. The company says doors will open at 8 a.m., following a countdown beginning at 7:55 a.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and a hoagie-building competition between local first responders are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wawa says the first 250 customers will receive T-shirts while supplies last, and free hot coffee will be offered through Sept. 20. The opening continues the convenience store chain's expansion in southeastern North Carolina. Wawa says it plans to open six to eight stores annually in the state over the next eight to 10 years, with a long-term goal of about 90 locations statewide. The company says each new store employs an average of 35 workers once open. The Scotts Hill-area store follows two other Wawa locations already open in New Hanover County.
