Nex partners with NFL to bring flag football to motion-powered Playground console

Nex has partnered with the National Football League to launch NFL FLAG Heroes, a motion-powered flag football game exclusive to its Nex Playground active play system. The game, featuring all 32 NFL clubs, allows players to use body movements to control fast-paced 5-on-5 flag football matches. Players act as quarterbacks and team captains in matches consisting of two two-minute halves. The game includes motion-controlled gameplay, character progression, and three competitive stages from school fields to NFL FLAG championships. Available through Nex Playground's Play Pass subscription, NFL FLAG Heroes marks Nex's third officially licensed sports title. The collaboration launches as flag football continues gaining popularity, with 4.1 million youth participants in the US and the sport set to debut at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Fox delays NFL media rights talks until 2028, targets post-2029 season negotiations

Fox will not renegotiate its NFL media rights deal until at least 2028, company CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced Thursday. The broadcaster and league agreed to postpone discussions closer to the 2030 season, following customary timelines. The NFL had planned to begin negotiations this year, capitalising on record viewership and contractual opt-outs taking effect after the 2029 season. Delays in CBS Sports parent Paramount's planned takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery are likely complicating matters, as CBS was expected to renegotiate first. Meanwhile, Fox reported fourth-quarter revenue of $4.21 billion, up 28% year-over-year, driven by the 2026 FIFA men's World Cup. Advertising revenue surged 78%. Full-year revenue reached $17.13 billion, up 5%.

ESPN and NFL Network to announce layoffs Tuesday following media merger

ESPN and NFL Network are set to announce additional layoffs on Tuesday, following the network's awkward on-air termination of NFL analyst Ryan Clark. The cuts stem from ESPN's acquisition of NFL Network and other NFL Media assets on 1 April, in a deal that gave the NFL a 10% stake in ESPN. The redundancies are a consequence of merging operations between the two sports networks, which had been performing duplicate tasks. Disney, ESPN's parent company, is now eliminating overlapping positions as it integrates the newly acquired NFL Media properties. Further details about affected employees are expected to emerge shortly, with at least one recognisable name already rumoured to be impacted by the restructuring.

ESPN strips NFL Network's schedule show after $3B takeover as Rich Eisen hints more changes may come

ESPN appears to be gradually absorbing NFL Network following its $3 billion acquisition, with changes already becoming evident. The network did not produce its traditional schedule-release show this year, instead airing ESPN's coverage, marking the first time in years it skipped the event. Rich Eisen, NFL Network host, confirmed on The Dan Patrick Show that whilst NFL Network will still broadcast seven games and continue programmes like Sunday NFL GameDay Morning, the Scouting Combine and the draft, other changes remain uncertain. ESPN has reportedly begun building a new broadcast booth, with Dave Pasch and Mike Monaco linked to play-by-play roles. Ian Rapoport became the first major NFL Network personality to sign with ESPN post-merger, securing a four-year contract. The deal gave the NFL a 10% equity stake in ESPN.

ESPN plans layoffs of around 30 staff following $100M revenue loss from YouTube TV dispute

ESPN is preparing to lay off approximately 30 employees, primarily in off-camera departments, according to reports. Despite the timing following ESPN's $3 billion NFL Media deal, the cuts are unrelated to the acquisition. The layoffs stem from multiple factors. ESPN lost roughly $100 million in revenue during a 2024 carriage dispute with YouTube TV that blacked out the network for nearly two weeks, affecting over 10 million subscribers. More significantly, ESPN faces ongoing structural challenges as cable subscriptions have dropped from nearly 100 million households a decade ago to around 60 million today. This decline has directly impacted ESPN's revenue, as the network historically earned $8–10 per household monthly in carriage fees. The company is now investing heavily in direct-to-consumer streaming infrastructure whilst managing the financial pressure from shrinking cable revenues.
