A Day in the Life
The Sr. R&D Sustaining Engineer will make an impact through his / her technical expertise and rigor to implement design / process changes and improvements of existing and newly launched products. This individual will work to improve product performance, resolve design, process, and manufacturing issues, address existing CAPAs, reduce customer complaints, prevent new CAPAs and improve customer experience.
The ideal candidate for this position has experience in medical and consumer device design and development, with a strong emphasis on sustaining and new product introduction activities. This individual is well-versed in the design change control process, production and process controls, and possess a solid foundation in root cause analysis and problem-solving techniques. Additionally, he / she is proficient in data analysis and evidence-based decision-making, including cause and corrective action mapping methods.
The R&D Sustaining Engineer will become part of a dynamic and fast-paced R&D group with a strong history of successful product development and global launches. This individual will interface with the end customer and various functional groups within the Diabetes OU while representing the Mechanical Engineering function in cross-functional Core teams and engagements with external partners.
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Drive and lead design and process improvement activities of complex medical devices and products.
- Lead the effort to perform root cause analyses, resolve and implement design / process fixes, modifications, and product enhancements
- Lead CAPA activities and drive corrective and preventive actions with appropriate and detailed follow up.
- Apply methodologies such as Design for Reliability and Manufacturing (DRM), Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Manufacturing Assembly / Automation (DFM/A).
- Lead and perform process characterization, design verification / testing, and Test Method Validation (TMV) activities.
- Perform Statistical analysis (DOE, Regression, ANOVA, Capability Analysis, GR&R).
- Help with equipment selection, tooling and fixture development, procurement, installation, and qualification.
- Works closely with strategic partners and vendors to support current products and initiate new production projects and assists in developing processes/techniques to meet contract objectives.
- Help ensure designs and design changes meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, and international standards.
- Work with suppliers to ensure components meet design requirements & diagnose design / process problems.
- Present technical findings or project status to cross functional teams and management through meeting minutes, design reviews, presentations, and other means of communication.
- Ability to travel within the US and Internationally, up to 25%.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or other engineering disciplines and 4+ years of industry experience
OR
Advanced degree in engineering and 2+ years of industry experience.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$98,400.00 - $147,600.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
