Requirements
  • Five years of experience in the construction, maintenance, and repair of outside plant supporting telecommunications services, including telephone, cable television, and high-speed Internet.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English to communicate clearly and professionally with employees, customers, and suppliers.
  • Knowledge of Fiber Optic Association, National Electrical Code, and National Electrical Safety Code standards and outside plant construction practices.
  • Ability to read general system layouts from blueprints and system maps.
  • Ability to accurately measure distances using tapes or other measuring devices.
  • Ability to take and produce clear photographic and video documentation of field work.
  • Ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires.
  • Ability to operate computer and test equipment associated with the position, including signal level meters and ohm meters.
  • Ability to work while standing 50–70% of the time.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Record check.
  • Ability to stand and walk 50–80% of the day on uneven terrain and construction sites.
  • Ability to drive frequently, including during the day and night, to various sites.

Responsibilities
  • Review and evaluate Fiber-to-the-Home construction projects, including plan design, span and drop replacements, risers, aerial installations, bonding and grounding, fiber-optic cable, splice cases and cabinets, splitters, wavelength division multiplexing, underground installations, and MDU lockbox replacements.
  • Perform quality checks on completed and ongoing construction projects.
  • Answer contractor questions regarding design prints and ensure Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards and maintenance-of-traffic requirements are followed in the field.
  • Verify footage, path depth, easement adherence, sequencing, and proper splicing practices.
  • Ensure appropriate equipment and materials are used during construction.
  • Meet with city, county, and Department of Transportation inspectors in the field.
  • Submit quality-control inspection forms in a timely manner.
  • Meet with homeowners to answer questions or resolve complaints and explain the construction process.
  • Ensure property restoration is completed to required standards.
  • Meet with utility locators and other utility representatives to address damages.
  • Notify management of damages or incidents.
  • Record discrepancies between field conditions and design prints.
  • Apply knowledge of fiber design, splicing matrix sheets, and documentation requirements and communicate that information.
  • Ensure system compliance with National Cable Television Association standards, Federal Communications Commission regulations, and company operating specifications.
  • Liaise with other departments to maintain technical knowledge of newly deployed technology.
  • Perform pre-construction ride-outs to verify cabinet locations, tree trimming, aerial pole lines, bore-rig placement, and other potential construction hazards.
  • Perform construction inspections for quality control in accordance with Technical Quality Assurance standards.
  • Maintain accurate as-built records as projects progress through construction.
  • Verify that property restoration meets company standards.
  • Operate test equipment as needed to verify optical levels are set as designed.
  • Document aerial construction, underground vaults, and cabinets with still images or video.
  • Prepare work orders to resolve plant elements that do not meet specifications.
  • Communicate construction-progress concerns to the Project Manager or designated Supervisor.
  • Work weekends or a second shift as business needs require.
  • Perform emergency locates as necessary.
  • Follow applicable local, state, and federal industry regulations, including traffic-control requirements.
  • Follow company policies and perform other duties requested by the supervisor.
