Requirements
  • A high school education or equivalent General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • Some knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience or 1 year of experience in a medical field providing patient care, such as nursing assistant, medical assistant, or nurse technician experience that included drawing blood, is required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may satisfy these requirements.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) training or retraining must be completed during orientation before providing patient care.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be maintained through retraining for the duration of employment.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain blood specimens in inpatient and outpatient settings according to established procedures, time frames, and safety requirements.
  • Obtain specimens requiring special collection procedures in inpatient and outpatient settings according to established procedures, time frames, and safety requirements.
  • Perform diagnostic electrocardiograms on outpatients and therapeutic international normalized ratio (INR) quality control and testing procedures.
  • Collect and process urine specimens.
  • Collect specimens other than blood or urine.
  • Label, receive, and distribute specimens in the laboratory.
  • Train Laboratory Assistants.
  • Ensure that quality control, maintenance, and performance improvement indicators are documented.
  • Assist the supervisor and coordinator with general management functions.
  • Order supplies and equipment for the section while monitoring expiration dates and appropriate quantities.
