Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in communications engineering, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Four years of experience in network engineering, implementation, or operations.
  • A disciplined troubleshooting methodology with close attention to detail.
  • Experience maintaining detailed configuration and testing documentation.
  • Experience designing, deploying, and supporting a large wireless local area network infrastructure.
  • Experience testing wireless products, including access points, controllers, wireless local area network infrastructure, and client devices.
  • Experience with documentation, integration, customer support documentation, and service development.
  • Understanding of authentication, authorization, and accounting and Internet Protocol network security.
  • Knowledge of the 802.11 family and related protocols.
  • Experience administering and operating wireless management systems.
  • Knowledge of virtual local area networks, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, Domain Name System, Internet Protocol management, and related data network standards.
  • Excellent understanding of interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for wide area network and local area network hardware, including routers, controllers, local area network switches, wireless access points, client devices, radio-frequency design, spectrum analysis, and protocol analysis.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication, technical documentation, user liaison, and personal interaction abilities.
  • Ability to respond to network outages, scheduled installations, and maintenance activities during off-hours while on active on-call duty.
  • Ability to participate in walkthroughs of construction sites for new buildings and major remodels.
  • A valid driver's license to operate state vehicles.
Responsibilities
  • Design, document, and operate a large enterprise Wi-Fi network.
  • Perform radio-frequency design and troubleshoot Wi-Fi performance issues.
  • Plan and design wireless infrastructure and service offerings.
  • Define configuration standards.
  • Coordinate projects from design through installation and operational transition.
  • Act as an escalation point for operations and support staff.
  • Identify ways to improve services and lead projects to implement improvements.
  • Provide consultation to other university departments.
  • Manage projects.
  • Identify and solve operational issues.
  • Train and provide support for other network engineers and specialists in other units.
  • Identify new technologies and determine whether or when they should be considered.
  • Provide detailed documentation supporting wireless services.
  • Provide support for ancillary services such as monitoring and authentication systems.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with HPE Juniper Mist Wi-Fi systems.
  • Experience with ArubaOS software and associated Aruba wireless local area network infrastructure.
  • Experience with Voice over Internet Protocol, Voice over wireless local area network, quality of service, and related services.
  • Experience using and managing the AirWave monitoring system.
  • Experience with ClearPass service policy and administration.
  • Experience with Ekahau Site Survey, Hamina, or a similar product for predictive designs and site survey analysis.
