Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required if hired prior to 1997.
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program is required if hired after 1997.
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support or Heart Saver First Aid within 30 days of hire.
  • Registration or certification is preferred.
  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or in patient care is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Assist nursing staff and physicians in delivering technical patient care.
  • Collect and tabulate simple data for statistical purposes.
  • Coordinate patient flow through assigned areas.
  • Assign patients to appropriate geographic areas such as exam rooms and infusion bays.
  • Log and file patient information accurately.
  • Fax signed release-of-information consents to appropriate facilities.
  • Obtain radiology results from WVUH/UHA systems as requested by physicians.
  • Contact outside facilities and ancillary departments for recent patient testing results.
  • Deliver faxed testing results to physicians for review.
  • Obtain and document patient data including vital signs, pulse oximetry, allergies, medication and immunization lists, and functional screenings; report abnormal findings to registered nurses or physicians.
  • Perform adult and pediatric phlebotomy and capillary puncture as ordered.
  • Obtain point-of-care and clinical laboratory specimens; complete quality-control testing and documentation accurately.
  • Arrange specimen transport to the laboratory within half an hour of collection.
  • Answer patient phone calls, document information, and report it to physicians.
  • Call patients with physician instructions and document telephone encounters.
  • Verify appointment dates and times by telephone and document telephone encounters.
  • Schedule appointments as necessary.
  • Report changes in patients' conditions to registered nurses or physicians.
  • Check the integrity of patient monitoring equipment, invasive devices, and oxygen; report findings to physicians and intervene in emergencies to ensure patient safety.
  • Assist the healthcare team with emptying wound drains, urinary catheters, and other catheter drainage units.
  • Answer phones, page staff, and perform minor clerical duties under physician supervision.
  • Provide total care within the scope of practice related to activities of daily living.
  • Set up equipment for oxygen administration.
  • Administer intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections, excluding chemotherapy agents, as prescribed by physicians.
  • Explain post-visit instructions to patients and accompanying significant others; report patient status to registered nurses or physicians before transfer or departure.
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Apply specialized procedural knowledge to assist the medical team or conduct procedures personally.
  • Take corrective action independently or as a team member.
  • Order and restock supplies in patient-care areas.
  • Monitor supplies for outdated items and return or discard them appropriately.
  • Safely transport patients and their possessions, supplies, equipment, instruments, laboratory specimens, and blood between areas.
  • Run errands as directed, including transporting specimens to pathology.
  • Remove sutures under physician direction after competency validation.
  • Perform preoperative skin clip preparations, hold extremities during surgical preparations, and lift, move, and position patients during procedures.
  • Document procedures and complete patient charges as appropriate.
  • Explain post-procedure instructions; observe patients for adverse effects and report status to registered nurses or physicians before transfer or departure.
  • Assist with training and certification of staff members and fellows on proper care and maintenance of procedure equipment.
  • Coordinate, maintain, and order supplies, instruments, and equipment for procedures.
  • Maintain safe and clean staff work areas.
  • Follow infection-control guidelines to ensure unit safety and prevent cross-contamination.
  • Maintain clean patient areas before and after use.
  • Perform terminal-room cleaning or isolation-room cleanup when necessary.
  • Monitor equipment use and working condition.
  • Assist with processing instruments between cases through washing, heat or autoclave sterilization, or high-level disinfection.
  • Prepare cleaning and lubricating solutions for decontamination of instruments, equipment, and rooms.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing cubicle curtains.
  • Transport trash and linen to designated staging areas.
