Requirements
  • A Registered Nurse license is required, with a diploma, associate degree, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing accepted.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Three years of full-time experience within the last five years caring for adult patients in an acute-care setting is required.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays, is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain Medical Surgical Registered Nurse qualifications and skills through completion of the Skills Checklist and verification by the contracting clinical manager.
  • Successfully complete unit-specific orientation and the competency skills checklist within the first three shifts.
  • Maintain competency verification programs in accordance with unit, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English well enough to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare providers.
  • Identify and properly use necessary equipment and supplies, and communicate their proper use to nurses, medical staff, patients, and family members.
  • Teach patients proper self-care and motivate patients and family members to continue procedures that promote rapid healing.
  • Provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of patients, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients over age 65.
  • Apply knowledge of medical disorders, diagnostic studies, treatments, professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures when performing nursing assignments.
  • Assess adult and geriatric patients as appropriate.
  • Operate computers and use basic word-processing, data-entry, and medical-record systems.

  • Experience in a medical-surgical ward or multispecialty environment is preferred.
