  • Advanced understanding of insurance, reinsurance and actuarial concepts.
  • An ability to keep up to date with Markel’s products and the global PEST factors affecting their risks and performance
  • Ability to problem solve with limited support on ambiguous requests or requirements
  • An ability to understand the key features of Markel’s insurance products and reinsurance treaties.
  • An ability to build relationships and credibility with senior underwriting and managing directors across International and at Group level.
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for International Pricing Standards, ensuring these are in line with industry best practice
  • Conduct pricing reviews, ensuring technical pricing capability is aligned to internal and external standards
  • Report the results of these activities to the Underwriting Committee and ensure, by working with underwriting divisions, that remediation is evidenced to the satisfaction of Risk, Compliance and Internal Audit.
  • Advise & input on International technical pricing strategy
  • Support preparation of self-attestation to Lloyd’s under Principles for Doing Business Pillar 1: Underwriting Profitability
  • Support whole account portfolio management activities, making sure underwriting is in accord with Markel’s International Portfolio Management Standards and applicable external standards
  • Support re-underwriting activities where necessary, ensuring quantification of underwriting actions is realistic
  • Advise and input on International portfolio management framework, ensuring the best possible chance of achieving required underwriting returns across the cycle
  • Review and support production of external returns, including to Lloyd’s, ensuring their timeliness and adherence to Markel’s standards
  • Work closely with underwriting leadership to understand Markel’s product lines and the business planning, pricing and portfolio management considerations for each
  • Implement the above through collaboration with, and delegation to, local underwriting and oversight teams across Markel’s regions, with as little activity taking place within OCUO as possible.

  • An actuarial qualification is encouraged but not essential.
