Requirements
  • At least two years of experience in court reporting and holding the National Court Reporters Association Registered Professional Reporter certification or equivalent (i.e., certified by the state of performance, another appropriate licensure, certification, or proof of education), with proper credentials provided within one week upon request of the client.
  • Ability to accurately report (taking down steno) legal proceedings at speeds of 225 words per minute and translate takedown from steno to English.
  • Working knowledge of legal and medical terminology, correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic mathematics.
  • Knowledge and understanding of laws, rules, and regulations governing court reporting profession and transcription activities, policies, and procedures; ability to use court reporting and transcription equipment.
  • Compliance with professional standards of the National Court Reporters Association; maintaining exhibits and documentary evidence; and effective communication with counsel, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • The Virginia Court Reporter shall have consecutive employment in a position with comparable responsibilities within the past five years.
  • Must be able to use a computer to communicate via email; proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related tools and technology required for the position.
  • All employees must conduct themselves to the highest standards of ethical and business conduct and meet milestones/delivery schedules.
Responsibilities
  • Provide verbatim transcription services of testimony to be taken during various proceedings including fact-findings, review boards, hearings, administrative investigations, Inspector General investigations, depositions, arbitrations, and other similar legal or Inspector General proceedings requiring a transcribed record, with testimony possibly conducted face-to-face or remotely via video teleconference, telephone, or electronic video conferencing platforms.
  • Perform real-time transcription of depositions and arbitrations.
  • Create a world-class professional service related to Legal Transcriptionist and Court Reporting Services.
  • Collaborate with team members including client contracting officer representatives, engagement team members, firm management, etc.
  • Test the virtual litigation platform in real-world settings and provide feedback to enhance the platform from a Court Reporter perspective.
  • Attend depositions and other proceedings that require written transcripts using the new platform.
  • Provide rough drafts of transcripts to counsel and parties when requested.
  • Provide real-time service during live depositions when requested.
  • Stenographically record and produce an accurate verbatim record of all proceedings; transcribe, proof, and prepare transcripts for distribution using required court reporting tools and platforms; maintain exhibits during depositions using those tools.
  • Partner with scopists and proofreaders for transcript completion.
  • Record verbatim proceedings of courts, legislative assemblies, committee meetings, and other proceedings using stenograph machines.
  • Prepare accurate final transcripts per client requests and submit final ASCII via the online portal.
  • Proofread transcripts for correct spelling of words and clarify inaudible statements when speakers are unclear.
  • Provide transcripts of proceedings upon request of judges, lawyers, or the public; transcribe recorded proceedings in established formats.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Administrative Investigation Board processes, Equal Employment Opportunity hearings, Merit Systems Protection Board proceedings, or arbitration hearings is preferred.
  • Proficiency with advanced Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word) and Adobe Acrobat; familiarity with data analytic tools and Visio, with ability to quickly learn other tools as necessary.
