  • Possession of a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, coordinate, and direct infection control program in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern such requirements in nursing care facilities.
  • Ensure that the facility follows current CDC, OSHA, and local regulations concerning infection control or standard/universal precautions.
  • Develop, maintain, and periodically update infection control precautions and aseptic technique to address problem areas.
  • Interpret infection control policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Maintain a reference library of written infection control material to assist in meeting day to day needs of isolated residents.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator concerning the infection control program.
  • Assist all departments in evaluating and classifying routine and job related functions to ensure tasks involving exposure to blood/body fluids are properly identified.
  • Monitor infection control practices and procedures to ensure that standard operating procedures for tasks involving exposure to blood/body fluids are followed.
  • Make rounds to nursing units for case findings, review of environmental sanitation procedures, and supervision of isolation precautions/practices.
  • Visit isolated residents to ensure that established isolation precautions and aseptic technique are followed.
  • Ensure that laboratory support is available, including microbiological and serological services.
  • Review and analyze infectious disease laboratory reports and consult with the Director of Nursing Services in developing care plans to assure aseptic techniques.
  • Assist in developing and implementing guidelines for decontamination and sterilization activities performed in the facility.
  • Perform periodic testing of prepared sterile packs, bundles, and supplies, including sterilization equipment.
  • Monitor the designated shelf life of medical items wrapped and sterilized at the facility, reprocess as necessary.
  • Ensure that all personnel follow established procedures for disposal and removal of infective and contaminated materials from the facility.
  • Prepare monthly summaries of all resident/personnel infections, corrective actions taken, and results; submit to Administrator and Director of Nursing Services.
  • Prepare summaries of special investigations on nosocomial and community acquired infections; provide Director of Nursing Services with pertinent findings and recommendations.
  • Maintain a written record of all residents and employees who have nosocomial infections.
  • Participate in surveys of possible carriers among residents and personnel, and tracing possible sources of infection.
  • Assist Director of Laundry Services in developing infection control procedures for handling clean and soiled laundry, equipment cleaning, etc.
  • Assist Director of Environmental Services in developing infection control procedures for routine and terminal cleaning of isolation rooms and areas, equipment cleaning, etc.
  • Participate in facility surveys by authorized government agencies as necessary.
  • Assist Discharge Planning Coordinator in developing and implementing discharge plans for residents in isolation or on infection control precautions.
  • Assist in development and implementation of a facility wide TB management control program.
  • Report all reportable diseases to county and state health departments.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc.
  • Serve on Infection Control Committee meetings; represent the committee as required.
  • Assist Infection Control Committee in evaluating and revising infection control practices and aseptic technique to maintain sanitation practices.
  • Assist Infection Control Committee in establishing criteria for classifying routine tasks involving exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Provide the Infection Control Committee with written and oral reports concerning all nosocomial infections.
  • Ensure that major changes in cleaning products or techniques are approved by the Infection Control Committee.
  • Assist in evaluating and implementing recommendations from the Infection Control Committee.
  • Provide TB assessment information and recommendations concerning isolation protocols for TB cases.
  • Develop and implement a practical system for detecting, evaluating, recording, and reporting infections originating with facility personnel.
  • Assist in employee health services program development and implementation; provide employee counseling as outlined in infection control and employee health program.
  • Provide personnel with information concerning facility policies governing hepatitis B vaccinations.
  • Assist in establishing TB Mantoux testing and recordkeeping protocols for all employees.
  • Orient new employees to infection control policies, hand hygiene, and responsibilities related to exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Meet with staff to identify and correct problem areas and improve services.
  • Develop and maintain good working rapport with all department directors and personnel to support infection control services.
  • Maintain good relations with medical profession and health facilities/organizations.
  • Review complaints and grievances by department personnel; make appropriate reports to Administrator and Director of Nursing Services.
  • Report known or suspected incidents of fraud to the Administrator.
  • Ensure unattended computer workstations are logged off or password protected as per policy.
  • Participate in interviewing and selection of residents for admission to the facility.
  • Ensure nursing service personnel follow isolation precautions and aseptic technique.
  • Isolate residents with known infectious diseases or place on infection control precautions.
  • Interview residents or family members to explain isolation and precautions.
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
  • Encourage physicians to timely record progress notes and orders.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatments to ensure hand hygiene during drug administration.
  • Review nurses notes on residents in isolation to reflect care and resident response.
  • Assist nursing staff in nursing care procedures as necessary.
  • Obtain culture samples per established procedures.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain an effective orientation program for infection control and employee health.
  • Assist in in-service training programs related to infection control; OSHA and CDC in-service training on hazard communication, TB management, bloodborne pathogens.
  • Develop training for all personnel performing tasks involving exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Recommend equipment and supply needs for maintaining infection control program.
  • Maintain stock levels of medical supplies and equipment on premises.
  • Assist in preventive maintenance program for nursing department equipment and supplies.
  • Develop and implement procedures to prevent waste of nursing service supplies.
  • Ensure labeling or tagging of contaminated equipment before repair or decontamination.
  • Assist in development of care plans for residents in isolation or on infection control precautions; ensure resident participation when feasible; review and revise care plans quarterly.
  • Assist in budget preparation for infection control department; monitor economic conditions and recommend adjustments.
  • Keeps abreast of equipment needs and recommend changes; report suspected fraud;.
  • Identify, evaluate, and classify routine tasks with exposure to blood/body fluids; develop policies to prevent spread of infectious diseases.
  • Ensure staff receive in-service training for exposure tasks; ensure availability of personal protective equipment.
  • Assist in handling and disposal of needles and other sharp instruments; assist in waste disposal policies for infectious waste.
  • Assess and evaluate new or improved resident care products or procedures.
  • Provide counseling for employee testing mandates for hepatitis B and tuberculosis exposure; maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain resident and employee exposure reports confidential.
  • Supervise and is Infection Control Nurse; immediate supervisor is Director of Nursing Services.
