Requirements
  • BS/MS in microbiology, biology, chemical engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial experience (8+ years is preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with both autoclavable and SIP reactors
  • Superb organizational skills. Experience with 5S methodology
Responsibilities
  • Execute internal tech transfer and scale-up of fermentation from ambr250 scale to 1 L, 5 L, 10 L, 20 L, 30 L and 50 L reactors
  • Collaborate and coordinate with Ginkgo's fermentation, downstream process engineering, project engineering, QA/QC Program, and Alliance Management to successfully deliver products to customers
  • Provide guidance during outgoing fermentation tech transfer and scale-up
  • Contribute to maintaining Ginkgo's autoclavable and SIP fermentation systems, informing facility expansion as needed
  • Maintain the process laboratory in an organized and safe manner
  • Curate, collate, organize, and interpret data generated from fermentation experiments and fermentation production batches
  • Interface with customer and contract manufacturing sites, which may include some travel
  • Lead upstream process projects from beginning to end, i.e. includes both “hands-on” attitude in the laboratory as well as teamwork, communication and handoffs to internal and external teams
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with fermentation control software (e.g MFCS, BioCommand, Lucullus, DASWARE)
  • Experience with (Python) scripting and writing sophisticated process control programs and data acquisition protocols
  • Comfortable with design of experiments (DOE) and using statistical process control software, e.g. JMP
  • Expertise in scaling a variety of fermentation processes
  • Ability to work well within a team in a fast-paced environment and balance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and data analysis skills
  • Enthusiasm and passion for precision fermentation and using synthetic biology to help solve some of the world's most complex problems
  • Experience leading projects and a comfort with being the interface between the technical process and the customer
