Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and five years of property and casualty reinsurance-related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience underwriting property and casualty insurance, property catastrophe, property aggregate excess, per risk, quota share, and multi-line excess.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate account risk and potential profitability.
  • Experience with property reinsurance pricing methods, including exposure and experience analysis for catastrophe and non-catastrophe perils.
  • Knowledge of third-party catastrophe modeling software products and their applicability to underwriting reinsurance business.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance contracts, terminology, and processes.
  • Advanced knowledge and functional use of Microsoft Excel for data analytics, Power BI, or other simulation software.
  • Ability to communicate persuasively in oral and written form and present information to varied groups and forums.
  • Ability to make effective decisions using judgment, experience, facts, and figures to resolve problems.
  • Ability to broker consensus by involving stakeholders in decision-making to maintain relationships and mutual understanding.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers and maintain constructive working relationships.
  • Working knowledge of basic office equipment and basic computer skills in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver's license, comply with fleet safety policy, and travel to customer offices or meeting sites.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
Responsibilities
  • Underwrite a profitable portfolio of farm mutual reinsurance business by developing short- and long-term goals, strategies, and processes.
  • Manage property and casualty farm mutual regional reinsurance business by deploying capital and maximizing profits.
  • Identify opportunities within the territory portfolio to grow the business profitably and use catastrophe modeling and actuarial pricing teams to evaluate renewals and submissions.
  • Underwrite submissions and renewals, price reinsurance programs, provide quotes, authorize contracts, and maintain relationships.
  • Provide members with expertise regarding business operations, risk management, and viability.
  • Attend internal and external meetings, including committee assignments, and contribute by asking questions or presenting information verbally or in writing.
  • Cultivate continuous improvement within the division by identifying opportunities to improve processes and efficiencies.
  • Remain current on industry trends, best practices, regulations, and the profession, and apply that knowledge to achieve business results.
  • Ensure mutual partners have sound business models that meet company standards and that rates are consistent with contract obligations.
  • Execute all aspects of reinsurance underwriting and member consultation.
  • Manage significant projects, predictive analysis, and reinsurance relationships while interacting with brokers, the division leader, and cross-division leaders.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
  • Work occasional weekends or outside normal business hours to meet position deadlines.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working with brokers and farm mutual regional accounts.
  • Industry designations such as Associate in Reinsurance, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Chartered Financial Analyst, Certified Public Accountant, or Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society.
