EyeSouth Partners is a physician-led management services organization (MSO) for eye care, affiliating with ophthalmology and optometry practices. It handles non-clinical, administrative work so doctors can focus on medical and surgical eye care. The company provides capital for growth, technology investments, strategy, and operational support such as revenue cycle management, payer contracting, staffing, and doctor recruitment. Physicians remain clinically autonomous and keep their local brand identity while joining a larger network. EyeSouth differs from others by being doctor-led, maintaining clinical autonomy and local branding within a nationwide affiliate network, and pursuing growth through acquisitions and partnerships under private equity ownership. The goal is to grow a large, nationwide network of affiliated eye care practices and ambulatory surgery centers, improve practice operations, expand patient access, and provide financial security for staff and physicians.

What believers are saying

  • EyeSouth added Sunvera Group, entering Michigan and adding 15 practices and four surgery centers.
  • The network keeps buying affiliates, including Retina Institute of Illinois and Community Eye Care Specialists.
  • Current scale gives recruiters, payor negotiators, and surgeons a stronger platform than local rivals.

What critics are saying

  • Cencora’s March 2026 acquisition strips EyeSouth’s retina business, shrinking growth and bargaining power.
  • The 2024 Illinois FLSA case shows wage-and-hour exposure and broader employer compliance risk.
  • Olympus retaining only anterior segment creates a de facto carve-up, inviting talent and referral churn.

What makes EyeSouth Partners unique

  • Physician-led MSO keeps clinicians autonomous while Olympus funds expansion across 14 states.
  • EyeSouth scaled to 70 affiliations, over 400 doctors, and 285 locations by August 2026.
  • Its retina platform was valuable enough for Cencora to pay $1.1 billion.

Cencora buys EyeSouth Partners' retina business for $1.1B to expand Retina Consultants of America

Cencora has signed a definitive agreement to acquire EyeSouth Partners' retina business for $1.1 billion. The affiliated retina physicians will join Cencora's Retina Consultants of America, a leading management services organisation. The pharmaceutical solutions company expects the acquisition to be slightly accretive to its adjusted diluted earnings per share in the first twelve months following closure, net of financing costs. The transaction requires regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Cencora's reaffirmed fiscal 2026 financial guidance does not currently include the transaction closing within that fiscal year. BofA Securities served as lead financial advisor to Cencora, whilst Jefferies advised EyeSouth Partners, a portfolio company of Olympus Partners.
