Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited four-year university.
  • At least 8 years of relevant professional engineering experience.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of manufacturing processes and mechanical design considerations, including injection molding, sheet metal, machining, and rapid prototyping.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of assembly and alignment methods, including screw joints, snap fits, dowel pins, and heat-staking.
  • Ability to identify and determine the root cause of system-level defects.
  • Experience designing and integrating complex systems while working closely with electrical, firmware, software, and systems engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to organize and analyze technical information, maintain attention to detail, and prioritize and plan effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and write detailed reports.
  • A positive attitude and focus on client success.
  • Ethical and honest conduct in every part of the job.
Responsibilities
  • Architect, design, and integrate intricate mechanical systems.
  • Represent design concepts using block diagrams, rough computer-aided design drawings or schematics, sketches, and similar methods.
  • Solve problems and design solutions incorporating custom injection-molded, machined, three-dimensional-printed, and sheet-metal parts, as well as semi-custom and off-the-shelf parts.
  • Perform paper studies using mechanical engineering principles such as force and energy balances, structural calculations, mechanical vibration, tolerance analysis, and mechanical power transmission.
  • Manage large three-dimensional computer-aided design assemblies containing many components.
  • Generate and maintain an organized bill of materials.
  • Create two-dimensional drawings using ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standards.
  • Prototype design concepts, test specifications, and iterate on designs.
  • Lead and mentor more junior engineers.
  • Collaborate with engineers from various disciplines.
  • Identify appropriate manufacturing methods for prototyping and production and design components appropriately for those methods.
  • Manage, organize, and prioritize technical issues and drive them toward resolution.
  • Communicate regularly with clients and project management about project status, issues, design decisions, and risks.
  • Coordinate with external partners in industrial design and contract manufacturing.
  • Support work on-site in the Seattle metropolitan area.
  • Conduct or inform simulations as needed, including structural finite element analysis, thermal finite element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proficient knowledge of SolidWorks or an equivalent computer-aided design package, with SolidWorks highly preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of 2D drawings, with strength in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5) preferred.
  • In-depth fluids analysis and fluidic handling experience, including microfluidic system design.
  • Experience specifically related to product development consulting for clients.
  • Experience using a computer-aided design product data management system to manage computer-aided design files.
  • Robotics, instrumentation, and test equipment design experience.
  • Experience with mechatronics and electro-mechanical systems, including stepper and direct-current motors, solenoids, gear and belt drive systems, linear actuators, bearings, sensors, and electronics.
  • Programming experience.
  • Pneumatic and/or hydraulic system design experience.
  • Prior experience with medical devices and working within a medical quality system.
  • Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, or experience with other simulation packages.
