Basel's world-beating pharma hub fights for place in new global order. Published on August 11, 2026 The Swiss city of Basel is still one of Europe's great pharmaceutical centres, but AI, geopolitics, new competitors and changing investment patterns are forcing it to fight harder for its place in the industry. Few cities in the world have an identity so tightly bound to an industry as Basel and pharmaceuticals. Roche and Novartis, two of the world's biggest drugmakers, loom large over the city. Walk across any bridge in the city, and you can see the white stepladder towers of Roche on one side and the Novartis campus on the other. Their origins in the area date back nearly two centuries, a history that began with chemical dyestuffs for the textile trade, evolved into producing pills, syrups and injections, and now into gene and cell therapies. "Basel has a long tradition of welcoming new ideas and people," said Maria Luisa Brooke, a tour guide with Basel Tourism. "This has made it a place that fosters innovation." This history is both a blessing and a burden. The industry has made... Full story here Are you the author? SWI swissinfo.ch - the international service of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). Nestle bets on premium, novel coffee flavors to draw in younger consumers in China. Nestle is focusing on flavor innovation to enhance coffee consumption in China, introducing the Nescafe 1+2 Coconut Latte as part of its strategy to attract younger consumers who prefer convenience and novel tastes. This launch represents the first new flavor from the Nescafe brand in nearly ten years, integrating a coconut flavor that's inspired by the coffee shop experience into the at-home coffee market, particularly targeting morning consumption occasions. To promote this new product, Nestle has enlisted Chinese Olympic table tennis champion Fan Zhendong as the brand ambassador. The move comes during a time when flavor innovation is becoming critical in China's dynamic coffee sector. Research from iiMedia indicates that 68.38% of Chinese consumers prioritize taste innovation when considering instant coffee improvements by 2025, reflecting a rise in demand for unique flavors within a category traditionally focused on convenience. Nestle's venture into diverse flavors aligns with the global trend in its coffee business, which reported a 7.5% organic growth in the first half of the fiscal year, primarily attributed to Nescafe. Coffee sales constituted around 26% of the company's revenue in the Asia, Oceania, and Africa regions in the second quarter, benefitting from a mix of soluble coffee and ready-to-drink products across key markets. Pamela Takai, senior vice-president for coffee business at Nestle China, noted the growth potential within the still-developing Chinese coffee market, where currently only about half of urban consumers engage in coffee drinking, often doing so infrequently. This scenario presents a significant opportunity for Nestle to increase market penetration and encourage more frequent consumption. Chinese consumers are actively seeking a variety of coffee formats, such as hot and cold coffees, and both powder and liquid options, while emphasizing the importance of convenience, taste, and quality. Takai emphasized these consumer preferences as essential factors for Nestle to fulfill in the Chinese market. The Nescafe 1+2 Coconut Latte stands out as a global first specific to Chinese tastes, replicating the surge in coconut-flavored coffee observed in coffee shops, while providing a more convenient and cost-effective option for consumers. This product launch is a key component of Nestle's broader initiative to diversify its coffee offerings in China. Recently, the company established a coffee stick production line in Qingdao, Shandong province, underscoring its faith in sustained local demand. Additionally, Nestle is venturing into cold coffee formats, having launched Nescafe liquid concentrates, enabling home preparation with cold milk or water, and continues investment in premium black coffee offerings through brands like Nescafe Gold and ready-to-drink products.

Bain Capital buys Gong cha bubble tea chain. The private equity firm will assume control of a 2,200-unit global chain, with at least 240 stores in the U.S. Published Aug. 5, 2026 - Updated an hour ago Dive brief: * Bain Capital is buying Gong cha from TA Associates, a private equity firm that purchased the bubble tea chain in 2019, according to a Wednesday press release. * The terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but the deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter. * Gong cha has about 2,200 locations worldwide, including roughly 240 in the U.S. as of March. The chain recently acquired 170 stores from its U.S. master franchisee to strengthen its American operations. Dive insight: Last month, Gong cha signed its largest direct franchising deal ever - a 50-store agreement in Texas - as part of its push to eventually reach 1,000 U.S. units. The brand also recently redesigned its store layouts and added an automated drinks maker as part of its Gong cha 2.0 rollout. That kitchen system, which Gong cha said can shave up to a minute off ticket times, is currently live in 250 stores, according to the press release. These factors have helped the brand establish "a distinctive and globally recognized brand with a loyal customer base and franchisee economics that are among the strongest in the sector," Naofumi Nishi, a partner at Bain Capital said in a statement, adding that the e brand has substantial room to grow both in the Asia-Pacific region and in the Americas. The chain recently overhauled its North American supply chain to help standardize its operations as part of a shift from master franchising agreements to direct franchising relations with operators. Bain Capital is an occasional restaurant acquirer: The private equity giant bought Fogo de Chão in 2023 and backed a clique of investment firms that purchased California Pizza Kitchen last year. Last year saw a significant degree of mergers and acquisitions activity, including purchases by private equity. Last August, Freeman Spogli bought Philz Coffee; TriArtisan Capital led the acquisition of Denny's in November; and private equity firms increased their purchases of restaurant franchisees. Overall M&A activity has continued into 2026. LongRange Capital is buying Pizza Hut's non-China business for $1.5 billion, Nestlé sold Blue Bottle Coffee to Centurium Capital and Roark Capital sold Nothing Bundt Cakes to KKR for $2 billion.
Celebrate National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day: August 4! August 4, 2026 Did you know that the chocolate chip cookie was invented in 1930 by Ruth Graves Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Restaurant? While baking, she used an ice pick to break pieces from a chocolate bar into small "chips" and added them to her cookie dough. The recipe quickly became a favorite with customers and soon gained popularity across the country. As demand grew, Nestlé recognized there was a market for chocolate chips and introduced Nestlé Toll House Morsels, making it easier for home bakers to create the famous cookies. By 1940, ready-to-bake chocolate chip cookies were available, bringing this delicious treat to even more families. In 1963, Chips Ahoy! became the first shelf-stable chocolate chip cookie sold in stores, and in 1984, Ben & Jerry's introduced chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream - a favorite dessert for many.
