Requirements
- Twelve months of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
- Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required registered nurse credential.
- Maintain Texas registered nurse licensure, obtaining a permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
- Hold Basic Life Support certification or instructor status from the American Heart Association.
- Hold Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification or instructor status from the American Heart Association.
- Obtain Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification or instructor status from the American Heart Association within four months.
- Obtain National Institute of Health Stroke Scale certification from the American Heart Association within four months.
- Obtain Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification or instructor status from the Crisis Prevention Institute within four months.
- Demonstrate the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job through ongoing skills and competency assessments.
- Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, particularly those affecting patient or employee safety or security.
- Effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers using a customer-service focus and positive-language principles.
- Demonstrate strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
- Function independently and exercise judgment when interacting with physicians, the interprofessional care team, patients, and families.
- Use critical-thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Responsibilities
- Provide professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, including patients with varied and complex needs.
- Conduct nursing assessments and assist with examinations and treatments.
- Provide direct patient care effectively and efficiently.
- Provide patient education and maintain medical records.
- Communicate and collaborate with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to coordinate quality care and treatment outcomes.
- Use clinical technology, administer medications, perform procedures, and manage emergencies.
- Act as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.
- Participate in or lead unit and shared-governance initiatives.
- Serve as a charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees when assigned.
- Contribute to service-line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.
- Use therapeutic communication, active listening, and teaching to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team.
- Implement staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes, and coach and mentor staff and students.
- Follow patient- and family-centered care standards and cultural-diversity and inclusion principles.
- Develop, update, and communicate plans of care, including discharge plans, with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team using the nursing process.
- Prioritize care according to patient needs, abilities, and preferences.
- Advocate for patients and families by identifying and resolving clinical and ethical concerns with appropriate resources.
- Provide patient teaching based on learning needs, evaluate comprehension, and adapt teaching methods.
- Follow standards of care, regulatory requirements, and professional practice requirements.

- Provide and modify care for complex patients and coordinate care based on evaluation of patient condition, with accurate documentation.

- Manage time, document care promptly, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks.
- Provide input on unit resource utilization, capital needs, and operational budget needs.
- Identify and present opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in patient care or unit operations.
- Offer evidence-based solutions through performance-improvement projects and shared-governance activities.
- Champion new care pathways or service-line implementations.
- Identify trends, support practice changes, research changes, and present options to shared governance and leadership.
- Respond to on-call requirements during emergencies such as disasters or severe weather events.
- Travel within the Houston metropolitan area when required.
Desired Qualifications
- Hold Magnet certification recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
- Hold Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification from the Emergency Nurses Association.
- Hold Trauma Nursing Core Course certification or instructor status from the Emergency Nurses Association.
