Requirements
  • Must be licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Tennessee.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Must be able to perform clinical care sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the required licensure.
Responsibilities
  • Assess patients’ general condition and take vital signs and weight.
  • Assist the provider with examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments, including phlebotomy, injections, dosage calculations, suturing, and other typical office procedures.
  • Administer patient medications according to provider orders and policy, including appropriate dosage, route, site, and documentation.
  • Orient, instruct, and train assigned personnel as applicable.
  • Provide basic patient care as ordered.
  • Ensure test results are received and relayed to patients in a timely manner.
  • Use AIDET communication fundamentals to support patient comfort and privacy.
  • Document interventions, patient and family responses, medications dispensed or prescribed, and other information in the medical record.
  • Provide patient education materials and communicate the provider’s advice and instructions to promote wellness.
  • Triage patient phone calls and appointment urgency.
  • Ensure adequate supply stock and maintain equipment.
  • Monitor and ensure accurate recording in patient medical records, and maintain required reports, records, and statistics.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding the practice, patients, and employees.
  • Use office and medical equipment, including telephones, computers, fax machines, stethoscopes, electrocardiogram machines, ear-washing equipment, scales, thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, and basic laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work area.
  • Maintain equipment in clean operating condition.
  • Perform referrals and pre-certifications as needed and applicable.
  • Schedule patient appointments per provider order when needed and relay appointment information accurately to patients.
  • Receive calls from hospitals and nursing homes and relay appropriate information to the practitioner in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with patients, physicians, and other care team members as part of a team-based approach to patient care.
  • Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards; complete required annual education assignments; work toward goals and objectives; and participate in quality-improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Twice a year, Leapfrog assigns safety grades based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
