Requirements
  • Must meet the requirement to be credentialed as a Qualified Mental Health Associate through MHACBO, with a Bachelor's degree in a behavioral science field, three years of full-time related mental health work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to operate in an ambiguous and frequently changing work environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience providing culturally responsive services, particularly for African American, Latino, and Native American participants.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and crisis intervention.
  • Understanding of evidence-based practices and strength-based case management philosophies and strategies, including trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to conduct a Mental Status assessment.
  • Ability to operate computer hardware and software needed to perform job functions.
  • Valid driver's license, three-year driving history, clean driving record, successful Driver Motor Vehicle check, and completion of the Cascadia online Defensive Driving course.
  • Ability to drive a personal or company vehicle for work duties.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with partners and independently to minimize risk to self and clients.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately communicate with police agencies in emergent situations.
  • Ability to quickly assess and respond to interpersonal and environmental safety concerns.
  • Ability to work with unpredictability and disruption of planned tasks using a flexible time-management approach.
Responsibilities
  • Provide on-site engagement, de-escalation, advocacy, referral, and support to adults accessing Multnomah County publicly funded shelters.
  • Assist in crisis situations according to emergency protocols and procedures, and coordinate with the Shelter Services Team.
  • Assess individuals' protective and risk factors, capabilities, and resources to guide intervention.
  • Assist individuals in seeking community resources and using natural supports to meet identified needs.
  • Triage service requests received from Multnomah County locally funded shelters.
  • Coordinate responses with shelter staff and community providers.
  • Identify and assess risks of harm to self or others using interviews, collateral information, and the client's psychosocial context.
  • Evaluate potential intervention outcomes, discuss risks and benefits, formulate the rationale for selected interventions, and choose the least intrusive and most supportive intervention.
  • Provide information and facilitate linkage to mental health treatment and other social services.
  • Consult with teammates, supervisors, program managers, and program medical directors as appropriate.
  • Respect client rights and responsibilities and maintain professional boundaries and ethics.
  • Comply with mandatory abuse-reporting laws and HIPAA requirements.
  • Document and maintain electronic health records and ancillary records in compliance with agency policies, program procedures, and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain responsibility for the safety of consumers, staff, and property, including familiarity with fire regulations and evacuation procedures.
  • Complete required annual employee training and attend seminars, training, and educational opportunities.
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings, supervision sessions, and departmental and agency meetings.
  • Work in community settings, primarily Multnomah County public shelter spaces, while remaining alert to potential violence, disease exposure, biohazards, noise, and contaminants.

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization.
