- An associate degree and Histotechnician certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, or eligibility for certification.
- A bachelor's degree and Histotechnologist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, or eligibility for certification.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, successful completion of a histotechnology training course, and Histotechnologist certification within two years of hire.
- Five years of experience.
- Supervise the histology laboratory and administrative assistant personnel.
- Train new personnel.
- Conduct performance evaluations in the lead area.
- Develop new procedures and evaluate new equipment and reagents.
- Recognize abnormal results, troubleshoot instrument problems, and recognize quality control problems.
- Routinely review slides with the pathologist.
- Log in, label, and process specimens.
- Perform embedding, paraffin microtomy, and cryostat microtomy.
- Process non-gynecological specimens.
- Stain slides and perform special stains.
- Perform gross descriptions of small biopsies according to protocol.
