Requirements
  • An associate degree and Histotechnician certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, or eligibility for certification.
  • A bachelor's degree and Histotechnologist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, or eligibility for certification.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, successful completion of a histotechnology training course, and Histotechnologist certification within two years of hire.
  • Five years of experience.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise the histology laboratory and administrative assistant personnel.
  • Train new personnel.
  • Conduct performance evaluations in the lead area.
  • Develop new procedures and evaluate new equipment and reagents.
  • Recognize abnormal results, troubleshoot instrument problems, and recognize quality control problems.
  • Routinely review slides with the pathologist.
  • Log in, label, and process specimens.
  • Perform embedding, paraffin microtomy, and cryostat microtomy.
  • Process non-gynecological specimens.
  • Stain slides and perform special stains.
  • Perform gross descriptions of small biopsies according to protocol.
