Requirements
  • A minimum of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.
  • A current unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the State of Rhode Island is required.
  • Specialty certification in the relevant clinical area is required within two years of hire or appointment.
  • A BLS credential is required, along with additional certifications or credentials as appropriate for the clinical area.
  • The ability to move throughout patient care and administrative areas is required.
  • The ability to use computer systems for extended periods is required.
  • The ability to respond effectively during emergency situations is required.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain 24-hour accountability for the operational, clinical, quality, financial, and people outcomes of one or more patient care units.
  • Lead interdisciplinary teams to achieve patient outcomes, workforce engagement, operational excellence, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality, evidence-based patient care.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of patient safety and high reliability.
  • Monitor quality metrics and develop action plans to improve outcomes.
  • Lead efforts to reduce hospital-acquired conditions, preventable harm, falls, pressure injuries, infections, and medication errors.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards.
  • Promote patient and family engagement in care delivery and decision-making.
  • Support evidence-based practice and nursing research to improve care outcomes.
  • Maintain continuous regulatory readiness.
  • Maintain accountability for budget performance, productivity, staffing effectiveness, and resource utilization.
  • Develop and manage operating and capital budgets in collaboration with Finance.
  • Monitor labor expenses, supply costs, and throughput metrics.
  • Implement strategies to improve efficiency while maintaining quality and patient experience.
  • Use data and analytics to drive operational decision-making.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of organizational resources.

  • Recruit, retain, develop, and mentor a diverse nursing workforce.

Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of leadership, charge nurse, supervisor, assistant nurse manager, or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Experience in quality improvement, staff development, and operational management is preferred.
  • Nurse Executive Certification, such as NE-BC or NEA-BC, is preferred.

Care New England cuts 30+ leadership jobs to close $20M budget gap

Care New England is cutting more than 30 leadership and non-clinical positions to address a projected $20 million budget deficit for fiscal year 2026. The announcement comes as hospitals nationwide face financial pressures from federal Medicaid funding changes and policy overhauls. CEO Dr Michael Wagner cited uncompetitive state reimbursement rates compared with neighbouring states as factors hindering staff recruitment and retention. The health system, Rhode Island's second-largest hospital operator, employs over 8,000 people across Butler, Kent and Women & Infants hospitals. Care New England has faced ongoing financial challenges, exacerbated during the pandemic. A proposed 2022 merger with competitor Lifespan was blocked by regulators on anti-trust grounds. The company spent more than $10.8 million on executive compensation in fiscal 2024.
