Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Graduation from an accredited vocational nursing program is required.
- At least five years of experience in a surgical care, acute care, or ambulatory care setting is required.
- Experience in a specialty area is required.
- The candidate must effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and internet access and utilization is required.
- The candidate must demonstrate excellent customer service behavior.
- Strong interpersonal skills are required to handle sensitive situations and confidential information.
- The candidate must make decisions effectively with appropriate stakeholder input.
- A valid California Vocational Nursing license is required.
- Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Fire Life Safety Training from the City of Los Angeles is required; if unavailable at hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
- Licensed Vocational Nurse intravenous therapy certification is required.
- One certification in a specified specialty is required, including Pharmacology, Long Term Care, Certified Dialysis, Certified Urology Associate, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Wound Care, Clinical Research Associate, Clinical Research Coordinator, Hospice and Palliative Care, Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist, or Infection Control.
- Keck Program Preceptor Certification is required; new hires must obtain it within 90 days or at the next available class.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Registered Nurse or medical provider and provide therapeutic care to a specific patient population under their direction.
- Use basic assessment, participate in planning, execute interventions according to the care or treatment plan, and contribute to evaluation of individualized interventions.
- Escort patients to exam rooms, record vital signs and medication lists, monitor patient flow, assist physicians with minor clinical procedures, perform electrocardiograms, prepare patient charts, and administer medication as directed.
- Provide direct patient care.
- Administer medications, including injections and intravenous medications.
- Assess and monitor patient conditions and notify the physician or other healthcare professional.
- Communicate professionally for patient care, education, and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
- Schedule diagnostic tests ordered by physicians.
- Schedule and receive patients.
- Prepare and maintain medical records.
- Perform administrative duties, including answering and returning patient calls, sorting incoming faxes, and obtaining prior authorizations.
- Enter charges into the system accurately and promptly.
- Handle telephone calls and write correspondence.
- Serve as a liaison between physicians and other individuals.
- Take patient histories and vital signs.
- Implement effective and efficient patient flow.
- Perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation when needed.
- Assist physicians with examinations and treatments as permitted by the license, including special procedures, minor surgical procedures, and diagnostic examinations.
- Organize pharmacy refill requests for physician approval.
- Work independently and in a team setting to complete duties in a timely manner.
- Provide medical information and education to patients according to established protocols and guidelines.
- Triage patients in person and by telephone.
- Maintain equipment and supplies and identify and arrange for equipment requiring repair.
- Maintain patient privacy, safety, and confidentiality and maintain a safe environment in accordance with standards, policies, and safety regulations.
- Ensure compliance with infection control policies.
- Act as a lead and train entry-level staff or new team members as assigned.
- Act as a subject matter expert to ensure team members are familiar with specialty procedures and provide in-service training as needed.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and support protocol development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
