Requirements
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology and the ability to type accurately with speed are required.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records and image management systems is required.
  • Strong attention to detail and expert keyboarding or scribe skills are required.
  • The ability to understand and correctly spell medical terminology and numbers as percentages, along with analytical and problem-solving skills, is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • The ability to work effectively with others and provide customer service to patients is required.
  • The employee must be able to walk, sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 pounds.
  • Strong fine motor skills and full use of the hands are required for grasping, writing, typing, and using technology.
  • Visual and auditory acuity, including color, depth, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus, is required.
  • Occasional driving or climbing may be necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Function as a scribe using retina-specific ophthalmology terminology.
  • Prepare patients and rooms for treatments and minor procedures as directed by the Physician.
  • Obtain patients’ past and current medical and ophthalmic history, including medications, allergies, and family history of eye problems.
  • Identify potential patient concerns and bring them to the attention of the Office Coordinator or Physician.
  • Measure and record distance and near visual acuity and pinhole acuity, and perform preliminary refraction using objective equipment.
  • Measure intraocular pressure using applanation tonometry, pneumotonometry, or a tonopen, and check pupillary response to light and pupillary defects.
  • Perform basic visual field testing and provide patient education as directed by the Physician.
  • Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate, as required.
  • Complete and maintain Ophthalmic Scribe Certification and, upon certification, complete computerized order entry under the Physician’s direction and applicable guidelines.
  • Instill eye drops as directed by the Physician.
  • Assist with applying dressings, shields, and eye patches.
  • Use examination and procedure codes, including ICD-9 codes, when entering information into the Electronic Medical Records system.
  • Ensure accurate procedure coding, charges for procedures and drugs, and diagnosis codes.
  • Keep examination, treatment, laser, and other assigned rooms clean and stocked, and keep drug counts up to date.
  • Provide customer service to patients.
  • Obtain patient consent for treatment and procedures when assigned.
  • Perform optical coherence tomography on patients and assist the Physician with treatments when needed.
  • Assist with patient transfers.
  • Travel to other assigned locations.
  • Assist in other departments and locations when assigned.
  • Perform clerical functions such as filing, keyboarding, scheduling patients, cleaning, stocking, and other needed tasks.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Certified Ophthalmic Technician certification.
  • Ophthalmic Scribe Certification.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Use of instant messaging systems.
