$41,000 USTA grant helps give Otsego tennis courts new look.

$41,000 USTA grant helps give Otsego tennis courts new look. By Jason Wesseldyk Sports Editor When members of the Otsego boys tennis team took the court for their season opener last month, they weren't just beginning a new season. They were also getting the first opportunity to compete on newly resurfaced and repaired courts at Otsego High School. The improvements were made possible in part through a $41,000 grant Otsego Public Schools received from the United States Tennis Association. And Otsego girls tennis coach Melissa Garrett played a key role in making it happen. Garrett, who was named Regional Coach of the Year following the spring season, applied for the grant that provided funding for what had become much-needed work on the courts. "Our courts were in rough shape, to the point that they impacted play and were even unsafe during matches," Garrett said. "I am so grateful for this USTA grant and for Otsego's support to improve the courts." The funding came through the USTA's Tennis Venue Services grant program, which assists with the renovation of existing tennis facilities and construction of new ones throughout the country. The grant also included start-to-finish project management assistance from the USTA's Tennis Venue Services team, including expertise in court and facility design and technical assistance. For Garrett, though, the biggest impact can already be seen on the courts. "As a coach, this resurfacing is a game changer," she said. "We can now utilize all eight courts, knowing that our players can focus on improving their skills and not worry about twisting an ankle in a 3-inch crack. "We now have a facility that players and families can take pride in when they step on the courts." The improvements should also give Otsego more flexibility in scheduling home matches after court conditions had previously resulted in the Bulldogs traveling more frequently. And the benefits extend beyond the high school tennis teams. The courts are also used by students during physical education classes, and Garrett said the district plans to continue leaving the gates open so community members can use them. "Tennis is a great lifelong sport, and this grant is really an investment in the Otsego community to continue to be active, outside, and enjoying time with one another on the tennis courts," she said. Otsego senior Sara McCaw has experienced firsthand the difference between the old and new playing surfaces. "Resurfacing the courts has given our team the opportunity to reach our greatest potential without interference from the many cracks and dead spots we had on the courts," the four-year varsity player said. "Getting these fresh courts means so much to our team and sets us up for success." With the work completed, the boys team became the first Bulldogs to compete on the renovated courts when it hosted Marshall on Thursday, Aug. 20. Otsego came up just short in a 5-3 loss, getting victories from Carson Wiser at No. 1 singles, Brendan Alkire at No. 4 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Dillon Campbell and Lucky Town. First-year Otsego coach Andrew Leneway came away encouraged by what he saw. "Our players demonstrated great sportsmanship, made honest calls, competed hard, and did an awesome job supporting and cheering for their teammates," he said. And while there were naturally areas Leneway saw that needed improvement, there was also plenty to build on. "We found plenty of things to continue working on, but we also saw a lot to be excited about," he said. "For our first match of the season, it was a great opportunity to learn where we are and where we can continue to improve."

IBM is changing how tennis fans watch the US Open.

IBM is changing how tennis fans watch the US Open. Aug 30, 2026 The serve has always been one of tennis' great mysteries. Speed tells part of the story. Placement tells another. Now IBM and the USTA are trying to show fans what is happening underneath it all. For the 2026 US Open, IBM has introduced a new collection of AI-powered features across USOpen.org and the tournament app designed to make matches easier to follow, more personalized and considerably more data-rich. The most intriguing may be Serve Quality, a new metric available across all 254 singles matches. Using advanced limb-tracking technology developed with IBM Bob, the system analyzes 21 points across a player's body and racquet 50 times per second. That means the technology can examine details ranging from wrist flex and ball toss to how energy moves from a player's legs through the torso and into the racquet. IBM says the system will process roughly 1.2 billion data points over the course of the tournament before producing a Serve Quality score in near real time. For tennis players accustomed to obsessing over toss position, leg drive, timing and contact point, it offers a different way to watch one of the sport's most technically demanding shots. IBM and the USTA are also expanding the tournament's Likelihood to Win feature with Key Moments, which is designed to explain the turning points and momentum swings behind changing win probabilities rather than simply showing who is favored. Match Chat has been upgraded as well. Fans can ask questions in conversational language during matches and receive answers drawing from live match data, analysis and historical information. Some responses can now incorporate relevant photos and video. The tournament's new Live Updates homepage will also allow fans to prioritize favorite players and more quickly find the matches, statistics and stories they care about. The technology arrives as sports organizations continue experimenting with how AI can improve the fan experience without simply adding more information to an already crowded screen. IBM and the USTA have been working together since 1992, building digital experiences that now reach more than 14 million tennis fans annually. "Our work with IBM this year has been game-changing, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in digital fan engagement," said Brian Ryerson, Senior Director, Digital Strategy at the USTA. For fans watching the US Open this year, the biggest change may be simple: instead of only seeing what happened on the court, they may get a much clearer picture of why it happened. IBM and the USTA Introduce New AI-Powered Fan Experiences for 2026 US Open.

IBM and the USTA Introduce New AI-Powered Fan Experiences for 2026 US Open. Aug 24, 2026, 00:01 ET NEW YORK, Aug. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - IBM (NYSE: IBM) and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) today announced new and enhanced AI-powered fan features coming to USOpen.org and the US Open app for this year's tournament. Three new, enhanced AI-powered innovations are designed to help fans cut through the noise, stay closer to the action and experience the US Open in a more personalized way than ever. Since 1992, IBM and the USTA have brought some of the most advanced digital experiences in sports to more than 14 million global tennis fans annually. This year's tournament comes at a time when audience demand for AI-powered features is gaining momentum, as accuracy, not speed, shapes the digital sports experience. According to a new global survey also out today from Morning Consult and commissioned by IBM, 91% of global tennis fans surveyed use sports apps during events, with high trust (64%) in AI-powered sports content. At the heart of this year's experience is the all-new Live Updates homepage - a smarter, more personalized way for fans to follow the action that matters most to them. Fans can prioritize their favorite players and quickly zero in on the matches, insights and stories they care about most. A new Serve Quality metric puts a whole new spin on how fans watch serves. Available across all 254 singles matches, the AI-powered tool uses advanced limb-tracking technology developed with IBM Bob to help analyze the precise mechanics of every serve - with 21 data points across the body and racquet, tracked 50 times per second. That means everything from wrist flex to the transfer of energy from a player's legs through their torso is captured, generating roughly 1.2 billion data points over the course of the tournament. The continuous stream of live data - including efficiency, accuracy, consistency and ball toss - is managed by IBM Confluent. The result: a Serve Quality score generated in near real-time, giving fans a new way to understand what makes a great serve great. Also new this year, Key Moments takes the popular live Likelihood to Win feature a step further, helping fans understand not just who's winning - but why. Available for all singles matches, Likelihood to Win calculates each player's probability of victory using an AI-powered analysis of current and historical statistics, expert opinion and match momentum. Key Moments provides additional, richer information, to summarize the swings, turning points and momentum shifts that change each match in an instant. The enhanced Match Chat acts as an interactive companion throughout each match, letting fans ask questions in their own words to get instant, conversational answers. Some responses now go beyond text, bringing in relevant photos and video to add even more context. Match Chat, powered by watsonx Orchestrate, draws on an expanded mix of live match data, analysis and historical information. A collection of AI agents and fit-for-purpose models trained in the USTA's editorial style and the language of tennis make responses feel right at home on the court. "Our work with IBM this year has been game-changing, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in digital fan engagement," said Brian Ryerson, Senior Director, Digital Strategy, USTA. "By leveraging their AI capabilities, we're delivering new, innovative, and highly personalized content and insights to our millions of fans worldwide, while significantly enhancing our ability to tell compelling stories throughout every match of the US Open." "Our partnership with the USTA continues to redefine digital sports experiences," said Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President, Chief Global Affairs Officer at IBM. "We can take millions of live data points streaming from the court and automatically route them into workflows that deliver usable insights in minutes and hours. These capabilities of Confluent, Bob and other IBM technologies help deliver a more intelligent experience, drawing greater value from data and changing the game for the US Open." The 2026 US Open runs from August 23 - September 13.
