Requirements
  • At least 8 years of progressive human resources experience, including at least 4 years in a senior human resources leadership role and at least 2 years managing people.
  • Hands-on experience administering a collective bargaining agreement in a unionized workplace, including contract interpretation, grievance management, and labor-management collaboration.
  • Current Professional in Human Resources, Senior Professional in Human Resources, Society for Human Resource Management Certified Professional, or Society for Human Resource Management Senior Certified Professional certification, or willingness to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience serving as the senior human resources leader for a small-to-mid-sized organization of approximately 50 people, ideally as a sole human resources practitioner or with limited direct support.
  • Experience working across multiple state jurisdictions.
  • Experience with employee relations, conflict resolution, performance management, and workplace investigations.
  • Strong background in human resources compliance, federal and state employment law, and labor relations.
  • Experience building and maintaining iterative and dependable human resources systems, processes, and documentation.
  • Experience using and administering human resources information systems, benefits management systems, and applicant tracking systems.
  • Experience working in or with values-driven, progressive, member-driven, and/or nonprofit organizations.
  • Experience supporting organizations through significant change-management moments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, equity, and justice in workplace practices.
  • Ability to coach, mediate, and advise across all levels of the organization.
  • High emotional intelligence, discretion, and judgment when handling confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills.

Responsibilities
  • Own the organization's human resources infrastructure, including Rippling, Human Interest, WageWorks/HealthEquity, Greenhouse, and related tools, ensuring data integrity, accurate reporting, and reliable day-to-day operation.
  • Lead payroll and compensation processing and reporting in partnership with the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Own benefits administration, serve as a point of contact for complex benefits questions, lead annual benefits open enrollment, and coordinate with external vendors.
  • Own paid time off administration and reporting.
  • Maintain the Employee Handbook, human resources policies, standard operating procedures, job descriptions, and personnel files in accordance with law, collective bargaining agreement provisions, and best practices.
  • Serve as project manager for federal, state, and local compliance reporting in partnership with the professional employer organization and legal counsel.
  • Serve as the primary or triage point for human resources inquiries from staff, union leadership, and outside parties.
  • Lead proactive staff communications about policy, benefits, procedure changes, and other people-related announcements.
  • Maintain systems, documentation, and workflows that support accountability and consistency.
  • Oversee the full employee lifecycle, including hiring, promotions, transitions, and separations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact, trusted advisor, and administrator for employee relations matters, including conflicts, extended leave requests, accommodation requests, and sensitive human resources issues.
  • Own the performance management lifecycle, including goal-setting, feedback cycles, reviews, and introductory-period processes.
  • Coach managers to apply policies consistently, deliver effective feedback, and lead with equity and clarity.
  • Lead investigations and conflict-resolution processes and escalate high-risk matters to legal counsel when appropriate.
  • Lead employee-experience research and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Drive retention and engagement strategies grounded in data and staff feedback.
  • Partner with the Learning and Development Lead on standard trainings and ongoing learning programs.
  • Administer the collective bargaining agreement, including day-to-day interpretation, application, and compliance with contract provisions and regular reporting requirements.
  • Manage the grievance process end-to-end, including intake, investigation, documentation, resolution, and coordination with legal counsel.
  • Serve as primary staff liaison to the Labor Management Committee and steward labor-management relationships.
  • Interpret collective bargaining agreement provisions with managers and the executive team, flag implementation issues, and propose resolutions.
  • Facilitate the biannual Equity Audit process, including hiring outside consultants, consulting with the Labor Management Committee, and leading review and implementation strategy.
  • Track grievance patterns, labor-relations trends, and contract risks and report them to the Chief of Staff and executive team as needed.
  • Stay current on labor law, employment law, and human resources best practices and maintain active human resources certification.
  • Guide leadership through periods of change and ambiguity.
  • Advise executive and senior leadership on change management, organizational transitions, and people-related risk.
  • Translate organizational strategy into a people strategy that advances the mission and supports long-term sustainability.
  • Partner with the Chief of Staff and leadership teams to plan workforce needs, organizational structure, role design, and capacity.
  • Ensure job descriptions and competency matrices align with compensation model categorizations and support equitable pay decisions.
  • Identify people-related risks and present options before they become crises.
  • Support succession planning for key organizational roles in partnership with executive leadership.
  • Contribute to organizational strategy as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Lead the People Operations team by setting priorities, coaching staff, and ensuring quality deliverables.
  • Set team goals and objectives and maintain accountability through documentation, regular check-ins, and follow-through.
  • Coach team members in their day-to-day work and professional growth.
  • Plan team capacity and coordinate cross-training.
  • Oversee the team's maintenance of staff information spaces, including Notion, Drive, and Slack, with direct accountability for human resources sections.
  • Lead difficult conversations with managers and staff.
  • Coach and advise managers across the organization on people decisions, team dynamics, and leadership challenges.
  • Develop and maintain training and resources for new and experienced managers, partnering with the Learning and Development Lead on design and delivery.
  • Convene and facilitate manager meetings and design agendas that advance leadership practice and build a coherent manager community.
