Requirements
  • The successful candidate must have completed high school.
  • The candidate must have a one- to two-year certificate in a Social Services-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • The candidate must have one to two years of prior related experience, including experience in a social service setting, working with marginalized individuals, and a social services background.
  • The candidate must hold or obtain a recent Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • The candidate must receive clearance from The Salvation Army Abuse Registry Check.
  • The candidate must complete WHMIS training annually.
  • The candidate must complete Praesidium Academy training modules relevant to the position.
  • The candidate must have current certification in Standard First Aid/CPR, FoodSafe, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
  • The candidate must be experienced with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint, as well as the Internet and email.
  • The candidate must be familiar with administration and file management procedures.
  • The candidate must have attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • The candidate must maintain confidentiality and professional ethics and exercise fairness and flexibility.
  • The candidate must be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • The candidate must be able and willing to work with, support, and serve marginalized people in a compassionate, non-judgmental manner.
  • The candidate must be able to communicate effectively and exercise tact, courtesy, patience, and interpersonal skills with supervisors, peers, participants, employees, students, and visitors.
  • The candidate must be able to manage stress and workload positively.
  • The candidate must be able and willing to lift or move equipment up to 25 pounds and ascend and descend two flights of stairs.
  • The candidate must complete general workplace safety orientation and annual review.
  • The candidate must wear personal protective equipment, including gloves and glasses, as required.
Responsibilities
  • The Residential Worker B provides a safe and secure environment for staff, residents, and visitors while delivering Emergency, Transitional, and Supportive Housing program services.
  • The worker develops professional interpersonal relationships with clients that promote dignity and respect.
  • The worker monitors the environment and clients to ensure safety and security.
  • The worker supervises clients and monitors behaviour for adherence to rules and policies.
  • The worker conducts required shift-change procedures before and after each shift.
  • The worker maintains required documentation and the shelter log.
  • The worker assists with conflict resolution.
  • The worker completes and distributes paperwork as required.
  • The worker prepares and serves food to clients at mealtimes.
  • The worker receives phone and in-person inquiries, interviews clients, and completes intake forms.
  • The worker provides orientation to new clients and explains program expectations.
  • The worker provides information and referrals to community resources.
  • The worker cleans shelter rooms, washrooms, kitchen, lounge, offices, and common areas.
  • The worker packs client belongings and prepares beds and rooms for new clients.
  • The worker provides laundry services for the shelter and shelter clients.
  • The worker performs basic building maintenance, collects and disposes of refuse, maintains the refuse area, and performs spot cleaning as required.
  • The worker contributes to staff and guest safety by removing snow, clearing fire exits, removing obstacles, and cleaning spills.
  • The worker performs other duties as assigned.
