International Trade Specialist / Maine International Trade Center / Portland, ME (Hybrid)
The Maine International Trade Center (MITC) is hiring an International Trade Specialist for their Portland, ME office. A hybrid schedule is available; however, the employee must reside in Maine for tax purposes.
Requirements of the Trade Specialist:
- Is energized by learning and taking on new responsibilities, making high quality decisions, coming up with ideas and running with them, and operating in areas where there may be ambiguity.
- Understanding of the differing needs of Maine’s rural and urban communities.
- Excellent communication including writing, speaking, and presentation skills; uses good judgment in determining appropriate vehicle for effective communication (e.g., phone, email, text).
- Experience in an entrepreneurial setting and desire to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone pitches in to do what’s needed for success.
- Confidence in speaking with a variety of business owners and ability to quickly grasp their needs and recommend resources and tools to support international opportunities.
- Familiarity with Federal, State and international trade regulations, or ability to quickly learn, and focus on continually monitoring for updates.
- Interest in international trade and understanding of/respect for various cultures and customs.
- Experience working with a CRM helpful. MITC uses Sugar.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Ability to travel within the State about 10-15% of the time; availability to travel internationally as needed.

- Salary range starts at $52k and will be commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities of the Trade Specialist:
- Account Management: Serves as an ‘account manager’ to meet the needs of MITC members and businesses looking to do business internationally. Understand their unique business needs and requirements and recommend resources, programs, and tools to support success. Identifies and develops business leads for membership, sponsorships, or general MITC assistance.
- Organizational Champion: Promotes the work of the Trade Center and the various programs, tools, and resources available to Maine businesses looking to do business internationally. Finds ways to expand MITC’s influence and capabilities by seeking out strategic partnerships with businesses, associations, and governmental organizations.
- Event Coordination and Support: Coordinates, and attends trade shows, trade delegations, and symposiums in support of Maine businesses seeking to grow internationally. Promotes and assists with MITC events such as Trade Day. Works closely with the MITC team to support incoming trade delegations and other governmental delegations and associations seeking to work with MITC.
- Territory Management and Business Development: Identifies and connects with innovative businesses, entrepreneurs, and other business entities in all 16 Maine counties to support their interest in growing and competing internationally and encouraging use of MITC resources and programs to support their success.
