Ample provides modular battery swapping for electric vehicles, letting drivers swap in a fully charged battery in under five minutes. The system uses lightweight stations with no heavy construction and is compatible with any EV, so no car redesigns are needed. It aims to cut costs and speed deployment: swapping stations are 3–10x cheaper to build than traditional fast chargers and can use wind or solar energy to deliver cheaper, cleaner power. The goal is to make charging fast, affordable, and widely accessible while benefiting from ongoing battery improvements.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Madrid Free2move and Tokyo Mitsubishi partnerships validate commercial fleet economics with major OEMs.
  • Government funding (€9.76M Spain IDAE, Tokyo Metropolitan support) reduces infrastructure deployment capital requirements.
  • Mitsubishi's $25M investment and battery recycling collaboration unlock circular economy revenue streams.

What critics are saying

  • Nio's 2,700+ stations lock Chinese fleets into proprietary standards, blocking Ample's Asia expansion.
  • Honda-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance standardizes competing modules, excluding Ample from Tokyo commercial truck project.
  • IEEE 2837-2025 universal battery standard forces Ample redesigns while enabling cheaper plug-and-play competitors.

What makes Ample unique

  • 5-minute swap times with fully automated computer vision robotics eliminate EV charging inconvenience versus gas.
  • Modular battery architecture compatible with any EV manufacturer eliminates proprietary lock-in constraints.
  • 3-10x cheaper station construction enables rapid deployment across cities without land acquisition delays.
