Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or a closely related field is required.
  • At least two years of wet laboratory experience with knowledge of typical stockroom operations is required.
  • Knowledge and experience working with chemicals and hazardous materials, chemical and equipment inventory management, and hazardous waste management are required.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, EPA, DEC, hazard communication, and chemical laboratory safety regulations and procedures is required.
  • Ability to assess risk and handle laboratory emergency situations is required.
  • Understanding of teaching laboratory solution preparation, including large-scale solution preparation, and storage is required.
  • Knowledge and experience with small chemical equipment such as pH meters, balances, and refractometers is required.
  • Proficiency with software and data management tools such as Excel, Word, and Google Sheets is required.
  • Ability to work effectively with little or no supervision, multitask, and plan and prioritize daily work is required.
  • Strong organizational skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Operate the Chemistry Stockroom and assist faculty and students with materials, reagents, and small equipment for teaching and research laboratories.
  • Manage the Chemistry Stockroom budget, purchase and sell chemicals, maintain account balances, and complete monthly credit card reconciliations.
  • Prepare charge cards for research.
  • Organize and maintain the chemical inventory, safety data sheets, reagents, and small equipment in the stockroom and teaching laboratories.
  • Assist faculty and students with purchasing and vendor information for chemistry supplies and small laboratory equipment.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise work-study students in the stockroom.
  • Dispose of old chemicals and clean and decommission vacated laboratories.
  • Support department marketing and recruitment activities, open house preparation, outreach, projects, administrative duties, and initiatives.
  • Maintain chemistry teaching laboratories in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.
  • Manage teaching laboratory assets and prepare student lockers, chemicals, solutions, small equipment, and laboratory setups according to course syllabi and instructor recommendations.
  • Ensure experiment setups, chemicals, and supplies are ready at least the night before laboratory activities.
  • Check the functioning of laboratory hoods, distillers, benches, and small laboratory equipment, and submit Facilities work orders as appropriate.
  • Manage inventories of reagents, solutions, laboratory equipment, and personal protective equipment for chemistry teaching laboratories.
  • Work with the Instrumentation Manager to troubleshoot facilities and process deliveries.
  • Coordinate with the Environmental Health and Safety Officer on hazardous waste management for teaching and research laboratories.
  • Prepare hazardous waste containers and documentation, transport hazardous waste to the main accumulation area, and properly store and log hazardous waste.
  • Procure tax-free ethanol as the Ethanol Inventory Control Officer and document sales and monthly inventory records.
  • Assist faculty, students, and staff with safety concerns involving hazards from equipment, procedures, and chemicals.
  • Store regulated chemicals and biological materials and maintain accurate chemical inventories and safety data sheets.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master of Science degree in Chemistry or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Two to five years of experience in a university chemistry stockroom is preferred.
