Requirements
  • A trade certification to journeyperson level as a Plumber, a valid British Columbia driver's license, and a minimum of five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance, repair, and renovation work on plumbing fixtures, backflow prevention devices, gas, air, water, fire protection, and waste disposal systems.
  • Handle low-risk asbestos or other hazardous insulation materials in accordance with UBC policies and procedures.
  • Repair machinery and equipment, conduct inspection tests, diagnose defects, take remedial action, and recommend solutions to the Head Plumber.
  • Assemble parts, equipment, and fittings using soldering, brazing, gluing, screwing, caulking, bolting, and other methods.
  • Perform work safely in accordance with safety standards, practices, and procedures, and wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain familiarity with preventative maintenance concepts, technology, theory, and manufacturer and regulatory maintenance requirements.
  • Respond safely and effectively to service requests and emergencies during and after normal working hours.
  • Use, correctly store, and maintain tools, equipment, and instruments required for the work.
  • Prepare cost estimates for jobs and order required materials.
  • Work from oral and written instructions, work orders, drawings, sketches, specifications, and maintenance manuals.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in the plumbing shop and on work sites.
  • Ensure completed work complies with requirements and specifications.
  • Monitor and check the work of apprentices and labourers as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Strong background in mechanical piping and/or service plumbing experience.
  • A valid British Columbia Gas Fitter B License with electrical endorsement for low voltage and a British Columbia Cross Connection Control certificate.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, sketches of required work, and maintenance manuals.
  • Effective oral and written communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous and patient manner.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • Ability to work various shift patterns depending on operational needs.
