Requirements
- At least a high school diploma or equivalency with at least one year of patient care experience in a healthcare facility; or a Certified Nursing Assistant; or successful completion of a Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant course at an accredited institution or equivalent training; or EMT or Paramedic certification; or a Bachelor's degree.
- The applicant must be able to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of therapeutic procedures and make accurate physical observations of patients.
- The applicant must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Basic computer skills are required.
- Basic Life Support is required upon hire or within two weeks of hire, and the certification must be maintained through an American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification, an American Heart Association-recognized equivalent, or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider certification.
- The applicant must be able to perform the stated physical job functions, including standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching, fine manipulation, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted, and exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
- The applicant must be able to maintain corrected 20/40 vision, hearing acuity with correction, peripheral vision, depth perception, and tactile sensory function.
- The applicant must be able to work rotating shifts and overtime as required.
- The applicant must be able to work in a latex-safe environment.
- The applicant must have at least one year of patient-care work experience in a healthcare facility, or one year working in a 0.6 full-time-equivalent GI Technical Specialist I position at MUSC CHS; alternatively, the applicant may have a college degree, active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals, active enrollment in an accredited healthcare-related field, or Nursing Assistant/Medical Assistant training or equivalent.
Responsibilities
- Assist surgeons, gastroenterologists, physicians, and other medical staff in preparing for and performing surgical and endoscopy procedures by processing and furnishing sterile and non-sterile supplies, equipment, and services for patient care.
- Provide technical support and assistance during gastrointestinal procedures, including endoscopies, colonoscopies, and other diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
- Assist healthcare providers in positioning patients, preparing equipment, and monitoring patient vital signs during procedures.
- Ensure the availability, functionality, and cleanliness of gastrointestinal equipment and instrumentation.
- Perform routine maintenance checks, troubleshoot equipment issues, and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed to maintain equipment performance and safety.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, nurses, and other multidisciplinary team members to coordinate patient care before, during, and after gastrointestinal procedures.
- Assist in patient preparation, monitoring, and recovery while ensuring patient comfort, safety, and confidentiality.
- Accurately document procedural details, patient information, and equipment usage in electronic medical record systems or other designated documentation platforms.
- Maintain organized records of procedures, equipment maintenance, and inventory levels to support quality assurance and compliance efforts.
- Adhere to protocols, policies, and procedures related to gastrointestinal procedures, infection control, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection-control audits, and regulatory inspections.
- Stay informed about advancements in gastrointestinal technology, procedures, and equipment through ongoing education and professional development.
- Provide training and mentorship to new staff members, residents, and fellows on gastrointestinal procedures, equipment usage, and safety protocols.
Desired Qualifications
- Successful completion of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates modules for GI Technical Specialist within the specified time frame is desired.
